05 - Vicki Putnam Pompa, 76, passed away January 2, 2026, in Newton, Mass. She taught for over 20 years at Mechanicville Elementary, and was at her happiest when she could instill a love of reading in a struggling student.

03 - Catherine E. Muller of Colonie, 96, passed away on January 22, 2026. Catherine attended Russell Sage College for her graduate work, and was employed as a special education teacher by BOCES Quester III for 15 years. She retired at 55.

01- Barbare Eveleyn (Mehrtens) Shafarzek, 82, of Colonie, died on Friday, January 2, 2026. She received her Bachelor's (1965) and Master's (1969) degrees in Home Economic Education from SUNY Plattsburgh. Barbara taught Home Economics at South Colonie Central High School.

095 - Patricia "Pat" Ripley Bloss of Ballston Lake passed away on December 27, 2025. After having children and staying home for a period of time, Pat dedicated the remainder of her professional life working in the Shenendehowa Central School District Elementary schools.

094 - Robert Allan "Al" Sholtes, 92, passed away at his home in Altamont, N.Y., on December 29, 2025. He served in the Army for two years in Germany. He began his teaching career in the Guilderland Central School District, where he taught for 32 years. He coached numerous sports teams highlighted by varsity baseball sectional wins.

093 - Suzanne Sheehan Walsh, 91, of Albany, passed away November 23, 2025. After earning a BA and a MS from the College of St. Rose, she began teaching elementary school with the City of Albany School District.

092 - Mary Kay Fischetti Blake, 78, of East Greenbush, passed Wednesday, November 26, 2025. Mary Kay had a teaching career, ranging from early childhood learning at Holy Spirit School to substitute teaching in the East Greenbush district. She also taught special education at RCG BOCES (Questar III).

091 - Patricia Dahl (nee Taffe), 79, of Rockaway, N.J., passed November 28, 2025. Pat graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a degree in history, and her vocation for teaching began in the Troy City School District.

090 - Karla J. Guererri, 65, of Troy, died Tuesday, December 9, 2025. She taught Social Studies in the Amsterdam and Scotia Glenville Central School Districts for many years, and later at Questar III in Troy. She was the Troy City Clerk from 2012 to 2014, and most recently was a teacher at the Mater Christi School, in Albany.

089 - Irene M. Sacala, 90, of Waterford, passed away Monday, December 22, 2025. Irene was a teacher at the Cohoes Middle School for 13 years and retired in 1997. Prior to that, she was a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and taught in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses.

088 - Garry Richard Weiss, "Coach Weiss," 82, of Clifton Park, died Thursday, December 18, 2025. In 1970, he began a long and distinguished career at Shenendehowa High School as a physical education teacher and coach. Baseball was his first love, but with the encouragement of his son, he also embraced the sport of lacrosse, coaching both with dedication and enthusiasm.

087 - Gloria Mayer Gallagher, 95, of Albany, passed on Sunday, December 21, 2025. She went to the College of St. Rose, received her M.S. in Education, and began teaching. Gloria taught at Cathedral Academy, Arbor Hill Elementary School and School 19, all in Albany, before retiring.

086 - Clayton George Carter, of Albany, died November 7, 2025, at the age of 95. Clay spent time in the military service, for the U.S. Army, participating in Project Moosehorn in the wilds of Alaska during the Korean War. He would later go on to dedicate over 30 years of his life to shaping young minds as an English teacher at Albany High School.

082 - Anthony J. "Tony" Welcome, 77, of Albany, passed away on December 14, 2025. Over the span of 50 years, Tony served in the Ichabod Crane School District, first as a teacher and then as principal of Martin Van Buren School, Martin H. Glynn School, and finally Ichabod Crane Primary School for the last 10 years of his professional career.

081 - Philip J. Bisognano, 94, of Colonie, died Sunday, November 23, 2025. He worked for 30 years as a school bus driver for the South Colonie School District, and was loved by the students that he drove to and from school, because he was the first driver to put a radio in his bus.

080 - Susan Joyce (née Norton) Lynde, 78, of Nassau, NY, passed away November 18, 2025. Her passion for teaching led her to a 38-year career at Carroll Hill Elementary School, in Troy, where she shaped the lives of countless students.

079 - Patricia Monsour Balcom, 80 of Castleton, N.Y., and Eastham, Mass., died November 10, 2025. 076 - Richard "Rich" Alan Hill Jr., 53, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., passed away Friday, October 31, 2025. He served in the U S Navy. He worked for over 20 years for the East Greenbush Central School District, first as a science teacher at Goff Middle School, and then as a physics teacher at Columbia High School.

075 - William "Bill" F. Aylward Jr., 91, of Altamont died Sunday, November 16, 2025. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, from 1956 to 1958. Bill dedicated 32 years to teaching in the Guilderland School District, where he also served as Social Studies Department Chair.

074 - David "Dave" Norton Read, 80, of Guilderland, passed away Friday, November 14, 2025. He began his career as a 9th and 10th grade global studies teacher at Shaker High School. During his 35 year tenure, he enjoyed building sets for the high school plays and musicals, and served as the NYSUT representative.

073 - Howard B. Engel Jr., 81, of Selkirk,died November 21, 2025. After college, he served four years in the US Air Force. He began his career in education at Lansingburgh High School, where he taught Health and Physical Education and coached. Several years later, he was fortunate enough to return to his alma mater, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, to teach, coach and serve as high school vice principal, retiring in 1999.

071 - Mary Kay Testa, 85, of Clifton Park, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2025. She started teaching at a Washington State Indian Reservation, then Brewster, Wash., then moving east to New York, she taught and retired from Shaker High School in the North Colonie School District.

070 -  Johanna M Stowell, 89 of Mohawk passed away Sunday October 12, 2025. She taught fifth grade in New Hartford, NY, Corning, NY, and Savona NY. After traveling around the state of New York for thirteen years, she set up roots in Mohawk New York and taught for 24 years between the Fisher Street and Jarvis School, teaching first, second and fifth graders.

064 - Barbara D. Quint, 91, of Richmond Hill, Ga., a long-time resident of Guilderland and Delmar N.Y., died in September, 2025. She was a Kindergarten teacher (Guilderland), and then a School Psychologist and Title I Coordinator (BOCES, Berne/Westerlo). Barbara healed others in her private psychotherapy practice for 18 years.

063 - Judith W. Mark, 86, of Slingerlands, died August 28, 2025. Judy's professional life revolved around education and information. That life included public school teaching in Ithaca, Albany, and North Colonie; and adult education with the NYS Dept of Civil Service and WERC.

Melissa was a teacher at Bell Top Elementary School in the East Greenbush School District, where she taught for 32 years. 058 - Mary Jean "Jean" Healy, 90, of Voorheesville, passed away on September 9, 2025. A longtime physical education teacher in Columbia High School and high school sports referee in the Albany area, Jean also owned and operated the King's Krest restaurant in the Helderbergs for many years.

(Legenbauer) Sheldon, 86, of Petersburgh, NY, died Friday, July 4, 2025. Beverly began teaching at the Berlin Elementary School in September of 1961 and taught in grades 4th and 6th for over 42 years before retiring. She then returned to substitute teach for another 10 years in the Berlin School District.

051 - Betty Jean (Elizabeth) Haner, nicknamed BJ, 95, passed away on August 8, 2025, in Vero Beach, FL. She was the librarian at Saddlewood Elementary school in the South Colonie Central School District. After retiring, she was very active in the South Colonie Retired Teachers Association.

050 - Angelina "Angie" R. Fountain, 91, passed away July 28, 2025, in Glenville, NY. Angie attended Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady, after which she embarked on a career as a secretary for General Electric and then the Schenectady School District where she retired after many years.

049 - Lois Arlene Frederick, 95, known affectionately as Arlene to her friends and loved ones, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2025 in Schenectady. Arlene's professional life was dedicated to inspiring young minds as a physical education teacher in the South Colonie Central School District, a role she cherished until her retirement in June of 1985.

046 - Michael James "Coach" Carney, 83, of Saratoga Springs, passed away June 22, 2025. From 1966 to 1969, he worked for the United States Department of the Interior, as an Educational Specialist, on the Island of Truk, in the South Pacific. Michael began his long career as an educator in Saratoga Springs, in 1971, where he taught in Caroline Street School, Geyser Road School, and Maple Avenue School.

041 - Johanna Mary (Breen) Bak, 80, of Glens Falls, passed away, Sunday, June 1, 2025. She dedicated more than 35 years to teaching, starting in parochial schools and later at Watervliet Elementary School, where she taught both third and fourth grades. Her influence extended well beyond the classroom, she served for four years as Teachers Union President.

039 - Judith R. Allen, 81, of Sarasota, Florida, died June 5, 2025. A dedicated educator, Judith spent decades nurturing young minds in the West Albany School in the South Colonie School District.. Her commitment extended beyond the classroom; she played a pivotal role in establishing teachers' unions across New York, ensuring that the voices of educators were heard and respected.

038 - John A. Richard, 94, a longtime resident of Wynantskill, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2025. In 1952, he was drafted into the US Army. He served in the Korean War with the 1319 74th Engineers Heavy Equipment Co. as a mechanic. After that, he did what he enjoyed most, teaching about cars, and coaching several winning trouble shooting teams at Hudson Valley Community College.

037 - Rosemarie A. Roesch, 82, and a lifelong resident of Albany, died May 22, 2025. Rosemarie taught kindergarten and second grade for most of her 36 year career at School 19 in Albany, now New Scotland Elementary, her neighborhood school.

036 - William Underhill, 88, of Rexford, passed away on June 2, 2025. He taught French at Averill Park Central from 1961 to 1963, Mechanicville High School from 1963 to 1966. From 1966 until his retirement in 1998, he was a teacher of French at Shaker H.S. He also taught Americanization and English as a Second Language classes at night, in Schenectady, from 1962 until 1971. Over his 37 years as a teacher, he taught students from grades five to 12.

035 - Mary Genevieve Miccio, 76, formerly of Troy, entered into eternal life, Sunday, June 1, 2025. She began her teaching career in 1972 at the former St. Joseph's School in Cohoes, and went on to teach 3rd grade at Harmony Hill School in Cohoes for 24 years until retiring in 2010.

034 - Gloria Seymour (nee Jenkins), 92, of Niskayuna, N.Y., passed away on May 29, 2025. Her teaching career began in the Troy City Schools, where she taught for two years before moving to the Niskayuna Central School District, where she taught for 38 years, retiring in 1997.

033 - Carolyn Ann Reichling Landau "Carol," 84, of Colonie, died on May 25, 2025. Carol went to work as a secretary in the South Colonie School District, but as her husband, was a local labor leader, when the teachers went on strike in 1975, she refused to cross the picket line and was subsequently fired by the District. After fighting her dismissal in court, she won the right to be hired back. She sued the District, won her position back, but never went back to work, resigning her position.

032 - Iris Elaine Rosen Israel, 78, of Latham, died May 8, 2025. Iris was proud of her accomplishments as a special education teacher for Rensselaer-Columbia-Greene BOCES and was devoted to caring for her students.

031 - Robert F. Swanick, 90, of Troy, passed away Monday, April 28, 2025. He was a teacher and coach at Tamarac High School. He went on to become principal at Tamarac and later, principal at Lansingburgh before retiring in 1989. After retiring, he worked part-time as an admissions counselor at Hudson Valley Community College until 2017.

026 - Robert C. Failing, Jr., 83, of St. Johnsville, NY passed away March 11, 2025. Robert was first employed as an Admissions Counselor at Mohawk Valley Community College. He then accepted a teaching position with the Canajoharie Central School District where he taught elementary education for 24 years.

024 - Thomas Anthony Filion, 84, of Saratoga Springs, died on March 25, 2025. He started his career in Beekmantown Central Schools in Plattsburg, NY where he taught in and served as head of the Industrial Arts Department. He retired from Saratoga-Warren BOCES in 1995 after 33 years of service teaching and being a guidance counselor.

021 - Mary Joan (nee Nertney) Van Kampen, 95, of Watervliet, passed away Friday, March 21, 2025. Mary Joan taught in Cohoes and Syracuse. After raising her family, she served as the number one substitute teacher in the North Colonie elementary school system until her permanent retirement in 1992.

017 - Barbara A. Bishop, 85, passed away March 3, 2025. She had a long-standing career with Capital Region B.O.C.E.S, where she worked for nearly three decades until her retirement in 2000. She was honored with the Education Assistant Professional Award for the State of New York, and was an active member of the NYS United Teachers Union.

016 - Maud "Hope" Davis, 91, of Schaghticoke, passed away Monday, March 3, 2025. Hope retired from the Brittonkill Central School District in Brunswick, where she had been a teacher for 24 years. She taught fourth and & fifth grades at Tamarac Elementary School.

015 - Catharine Jennings Kilby, 70, of Schaghticoke, passed on February 28, 2025. Cathy's career was focused on teaching Math, first at Hudson Valley Community College, and then later at several regional central schools, including Hoosick Falls, Cambridge, and Granville.

013 - Felix "Phil" Wielewinski, 95, of Colonie, bravely crossed the River Jordan, trumpet in hand, on February 22, 2025. As a young man, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as the camp bugler, "sleeping in" by mistake only once. He shaped many young minds in South Colonie Schools, where he was a loved and respected music teacher.

012 - Muriel H. Falkey, 103, of Greenville, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2025. Muriel taught Business Law, Advanced Accounting, and Typing at Greenville Central School, retiring in 1976.

009 - Patricia "Pat" A. Stone, 84, of Clifton Park, passed away February 9, 2025. Pat had been an educator for the Shenendehowa Central School District for over 40 years, where she worked as a first-grade teacher, reading teacher, administrator, and in Staff Development, teaching, training and coaching the school's curriculum to other teachers.

008 - Jean F. Michaniw, 75, of Schenectady, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2025. For 36 years, she imparted her love of music to the young minds at Ichabod Crane Primary School. Even after her retirement, Jean continued to inspire others by teaching music at St. Kateri Tekakwitha for three more years.

007 - Mary Patrick Milford, 75, of Halfmoon, formerly of Clifton Park and Glenville, died Thursday, February 20, 2025. In 1972, Mary's first full-time teaching position was in a newly integrated school system in Georgia. Mary retired from Schenectady City School District, where she had been a Middle School and High School reading teacher, then a literacy coach for over 35 years.

006 - Jeanne Capwell Harris, 93, a decades-long resident of Colonie, N.Y., and more recently of Lakewood, Colo., passed away February 1, 2025. She began teaching in Troy, N.Y., before settling in South Colonie in 1959, where she raised her family and taught reading before spending 30 years shaping young minds at Forest Park Elementary School.

005 - Patrick B. Flynn, 84, of Albany died on Saturday, January 25, 2025. Pat juggled his first teaching job at Hackett Middle School and his young family, while earning a master's in Special Education at The College of Saint Rose. He taught in the Guilderland School District and later for BOCES.

003 - Michael Anthony "Mick" Durante, 91, of Latham, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2025. He taught Social Studies to seventh and eighth graders in South Colonie Schools for 32 years at Lishakill, Sand Creek and Saddlewood middle schools.

001 - Stephen Benedict Lynch, 76, of Latham, passed away January 3, 2025. Stephen pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor's degree from S.U.N.Y. Oneonta, a Master's degree from The College of Saint Rose, and an Advanced Certificate from S.U.N.Y. Albany. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1970 to 1973.
