Harold E. Buck, Jr., 81, of Rockville Centre, NY, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2019. Harold was a science teacher at Hicksville Middle School for more than 30 years. He was a member of Alerts Engine Company No. 2 of the Rockville Centre Fire Department for 54 years, and served as its captain. Posted August 24, 2020.

John Edward “Jack” Hubbard passed away December 29, 2019 in Tucson, Arizona. Born in 1933 in Binghamton, NY, served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps. Jack was a Professor at the State University of New York at Brockport where he taught Earth Sciences for more than 30 years. Jack conducted numerous workshops to train young science professors in hydrology. Posted August 24, 2020.

Howard “Duke” C. Miller, Jr., of Plattsburgh passed away on September 17, 2019. He was born in Latham, NY on March 18, 1932. After college graduation he had a long and distinguished career teaching at SUNY Plattsburgh for forty years where he was involved in many committees.

Billie Jean Peterson, 80, of Nassau, passed away December 31, 2019. Billie Jean was born on September 21, 1939, in Mount Clemens, Mich.  Billie retired from the East Greenbush Central School District after working 29 years in the school's cafeteria system.

George H. Amedore, 72, of Saratoga Springs, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2019. He worked for Saratoga Schools as a school psychologist and principal of the Division Street School, Assistant Superintendent of the South Glens Falls school district and, later, Superintendent in Plattsburgh until he retired in 2002.  He was an advocate for Special Education students, integrating them into the regular classroom long before it was common practice.

Richard (Dick) Agar, 90, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2019, in Belleville, IL. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korea crisis and in 1956, he became part of the Burnt Hills – Ballston Lake teaching staff. In addition to teaching physical education, he coached freshman football and basketball for both boys and girls during his tenure. Having retired in 1987 from teaching he later drove a bus until 2016.

Dave Goyette, of Scotia, passed away on December 28, 2019, at the age of 61. He created the curriculum and the lab for the Fulton Montgomery Community College HVAC/R program, and taught the courses for several years.

Frank E. Raymond, 77, former resident of Mechanicville, died Monday, December 30, 2019, in Hudson, Fla. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962-66. Frank was an associate professor at Hudson Valley Community College for 33 years, as a Computer Aided Machinery and Drawing instructor, retiring in 2011.

Born in Ilion, N.Y. on December 20, 1930, she spent most of her career in the South Colonie School District, teaching sixth grade at Shaker Elementary and Sand Creek Middle School for many years until her retirement in 1989.

Edward G. VanAmerongen, 86, of Colonie, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2019. He joined the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1955. Edward became a technology teacher and was known by his students as "Mr. Van." He retired from the South Colonie School District after 25 years in 1987.

Ronald P. Mullen, 72, of Freehold, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2019. He was born on February 22, 1947, in Newburgh. He began working at Greenville Central School as a math teacher in 1969 and continued until his retirement in 2000.

John Daniel Walko, 77, of Watervliet, died December 7, 2019. He taught social studies at Columbia High School in East Greenbush for over 30 years. At Columbia he was the founder of the Model Congress Club which he led for decades. In addition, he retired from teaching public policy and education at H.V.C.C. and SUNY Albany.

Michael T. Nyhan, 71, of Burnt Hills, died Thursday, December 12, 2019. In 1970, he joined the United States Army, serving stateside in the Medical Service Corps After military service, Mike taught science courses at Blind Brook High School in Rye, N.Y. Later, he served in administrative positions at Burnt Hills High School and the Schodack Central School District until his retirement in 2005.

Mary K. Eaton McDonough, 79, of Clifton Park, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2019. She worked as a teacher and a librarian before raising her family. She later obtained her license in real estate to pursue her career as a realtor.

Amelia Therese (Citrano) Curtin, 78,  of Saratoga Springs, passed away December 14, 2019. Amelia was a librarian assistant for almost 20 years at Chango Elementary School and Shatekon Elementary School in the Shenendehowa School District in Clifton Park.

Frances D. "Fran" Yankowski, 86, of Clifton Park, formerly of Galway and Guilderland, died Thursday, December 12, 2019. She worked as a registered nurse at Ellis Hospital for 22 years before being  employed by the Capital Region BOCES, where she taught practical nursing for 22 years, retiring in 1998.

Alan H. Arnold, 87, of Saratoga Springs, died on Saturday, December 14, 2019. Alan played with many orchestras, some of them being the Huntington, N.Y. Symphony, the Glens Falls Symphony, and the Music Company Orchestra, as well as several others. He also taught for 35 years in the Jericho, New York Public Schools.

Warren E. Wells, 92, of North Nassau, died on Friday, December 6, 2019. Born in Bridgeport, Conn., Warren was a biology and general science teacher in Lansingburgh School for 22 years and also taught summer school at Troy High School. He was President of the N.Y.S. Maple Producers Association for several year, a member of the Maple Hall of Fame in Croghan, N.Y. in 2000 and owned and operated a maple business since 1969.

Mary Elizabeth "Mert" Paton, 79, of Brant Lake passed on Wednesday, December 4, 2019. Mert worked as a physical education instructor with the Pontiac School System in Pontiac, MI,  St. Ambrose elementary school and then at Shaker High School in North Colonie. In 1975, she joined the Troy School District as a guidance counselor at the Troy Alternate Learning Center, where she worked until her retirement in 1996.

Mary Domblewski passed away December 6, 2019. Mary was born in Rotterdam Junction, New York, in 1922, and worked very hard on the Home Front during World War II as a secretary for the General Electric Company and as a volunteer candy striper in the local hospital. When her children got older, Mary went to work at Draper School (later merged with the Mohonasen School District) in Rotterdam, where she took on a series of administrative duties.

Knute R. Krom “Rocky”, 78, of Latham, passed away Monday, December 9, 2019. Born in Albany, Rocky worked various jobs throughout his life including as a waiter and in construction. He went on to retire from (South) Colonie Central High School as a security guard after 35 years.

Dale C. Turner, 60, of the Town of Little Falls, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2019. After completing his education, Dale accepted a position as an assistant principal at Ilion High School. He then became a principal for Remsen High School and retired after 20 years of service in the education field. At the time of his death, Dale was a college English instructor and consultant for the Utica Academy of Science and he also taught English online to students in Beijing, China.

Kathleen A. Rinella, 80 of Loudonville, went to her heavenly reward on November 29, 2019. A resident of Loudonville for 57 years, Kathie taught for two years at Maplewood Elementary School and 15 years at Good Shepherd Nursery School.

Virginia "Ginny" Buniak, 95 of Clifton Park, previously a longtime resident of Hudson, N.Y., died Wednesday, November 20, 2019. Early in her life, Ginny worked as a "Lunch Lady" at Greenport School in Hudson. Later she managed the cafe and hospitality shop at Columbia Memorial Hospital and was a lifetime member of the CMH Auxiliary.

Anthony L. "Dudie" Cocozzo, 84 of Mechanicville, died Thursday evening, December 5, 2019. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959-61. Anthony had a lifetime association with Mechanicville City School District, having served as superintendent, business manager, teacher and coach for years.

Joanne O'Leary of Nassau passed away December 3, 2019. Born in Syracuse, N.Y., Joanne completed her master's degree in counseling psychology and worked for many years as a dedicated, hard-working and compassionate guidance counselor in East Greenbush. She loved her middle schoolers.

James C. Mawn, 89, formerly of Mechanicville, died on Saturday, November 30, 2019, in Princeton, Ky. As a De La Salle Christian Brother he taught at Christian Brothers schools in Michigan and New York before leaving the Order in 1958. Later he taught general science at the junior/senior high school level in New Rochelle, Yorktown Heights and Pelham, N.Y. from which he retired from teaching in 1985 after 27 years in public secondary education.

Paul F. Hooker, 81, of Scotia, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2019. Paul taught Social Studies at Shaker High School in North Colonie for four years, serving as class advisor. After receiving his certification in guidance, Paul worked as a guidance counselor at Shaker High School, until his retirement in 1993. Paul received Proctor's Theater Award for "Special Recognition for dedicated service" for leading a group of volunteer fundraisers and refreshment staff (the bartenders) for the theatre for over 25 years.

Coppola, Jr., 95, of Delray Beach, Florida passed away Sunday, November  24, 2019. After returning from the European theatre of WWII, Tony began his teaching career at Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady. His family moved to Connecticut in 1963 where he would finish his teaching career as District Coordinator and Department Chair of World Languages at Wilton High School.

Carol Ann Garofalo, 85, of Clifton Park, passed away November 10, 2019. Carol and her late husband operated a tax and business services company. In addition she taught home economics many years for the Shenendehowa School System.

Thomas Tucker, 76, of Ravena, passed away November 20, 2019. Tom taught business subjects and coached at Draper High School in Schenectady and at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School. Upon retirement he became the editor-in-chief for ten years at the Ravena News Herald. Tom was a veteran of the U.S. Army and N.Y.S. Army National Guard.

Kevin P. Harrington, 38, of Pittsfield, MA, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2019. Kevin worked for 13 years as a Special Education teacher at his former high school, Taconic. He was also a peer resource counselor, another one of the many ways in which Kevin was able to provide support and encouragement to his students.

Mary Elizabeth VanDeCarr, 93, of Rhinebeck, died November 13, 2019. Mary worked as a secretary for the Wappingers Central School District for 30 years and served as dog warden for one term. Mary loved animals and had a passion for rescuing dogs.

She was born in Hartfield, New York on March 1, 1926 and grew up helping her family run the Lighthouse Point grocery store in Chautauqua, New York. She enjoyed a long career teaching shorthand and business math at Linton High School in Schenectady, New York.

Roger E. Tourtellot, 65, of Ballston Spa, died Wednesday, November 20, 2019. He served in the US Army until his honorable discharge as an E-4 on February 1, 1978. Roger had a long and fulfilling career at Shenendehowa Central School as a security officer until his retirement.

Born in Boston on September 27, 1931, he was employed as a special education teacher for 30 years in the Greater Amsterdam School District. Ed was an honorably discharged United States Army veteran of the Korean War, serving with the 2nd Infantry Division from 1952 to 1954.

Bertha Mackey Golden, 97, of Schenectady, NY, died November 1, 2019. She was born on November 7, 1921 and was one of 12 children. Bertha attended school through the 8th grade. She then worked at a clothing factory in Chambersburg, PA. Bertha was a homemaker and also worked as a lunch lady in her children's elementary school.

Marea Reid-Roberts, 91, of Colonie passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2019. She worked as a librarian and media specialist for 28 years in the South Colonie school district retiring in 1989. Marea was a librarian at both West Albany and Veeder Elementary Schools. She was very active in NYSUT Retiree Council 10 where she was known as "The Travel Queen" for her many years of arranging bus trips and social events for RC10.

Owen Dale Sutton died on Oct. 23, 2019 at age 89. He served as an elementary principal of Shenendehowa Central Schools for 20 years. After retiring Owen served as a volunteer for Literacy Volunteers of America, the Master Gardening program of Cooperative Extension, Friends of the Library, and Hospice.

Grant, Price Chopper, Stewarts and Hale's Vegetable Stand into her eighties.

Geralyn E. Minkler, 76, of Galway, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2019. Geralyn ran a daycare in her home in Niskayuna for many years. She later moved to Galway and was a teacher's aide at the Galway Central Schools, retiring in 2010.

Philip J. Kaufman, 77, of Niskayuna, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2019. Born and educated in Buffalo, NY, Philip was a Vietnam era Navy veteran, Philip was employed by the Schenectady City School District for more than 21 years as a plumber prior to his retirement.

Theodore "Teddy" R. D'Aloia, 81, of Saratoga Springs, passed away Monday, October 21, 2019. Born in Troy on October 29, 1937, Teddy taught in South Colonie and Valley Stream, Long Island, before joining the Saratoga Springs School system in 1964. During his 34 year tenure there, he served as a classroom teacher, math teacher and principal of Schools 2, 4 and Division Street School.

John R. Ostwald, 69, of Troy, died on October 19, 2019. John was a Professor of Psychology at HVCC, retiring in 2015. He was a columnist for The Record and Saratogian newspapers. John was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam Era and was an advocate for veterans.

Born in Schenectady, NY, Paul  proudly served in the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Army in the second armored division (Hell on Wheels) as a Communications Specialist. He was both an Elementary School Principal and School Administrator for the Schalmont School District.

Esther J. Bartlett, 87, of Scotia, passed away Oct. 10, 2019. She worked at Ellis Hopsital as a Nurse's Aide, then as a clerk for GE Aeronautics until taking time to raise her family. She later returned to work in the Duanesburg Central School System.

Peter McMahon, 75, of Lake Katrine, NY, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2019. Peter was a tenured science teacher at Red Hook Central Schools in Red Hook, NY from 1967 to 2000. He also was involved with the NYSUT Retiree Council 13, as a member of their Board of Directors and as treasurer. In 2015, Peter was honored as the NYSUT Retiree of the Year.

Frederick T. Gula, of Venice, Florida and formerly of Guilderland, passed away Saturday, September 14, 2019. He honorably served his country in the United States Army and went on to his career as a physical education teacher with the Greenville School District and once moving to the area taught P.E. at Scotia-Glenville Schools. After several years, Fred became the principal of Scotia-Glenville Elementary School.

When she retired in 1995, Jean was also the Director of the Psychology Advisement Center at SUNYA.

Werner William "Bill" Berglas, 90, of Niskayuna, passed away on September 29, 2019. Dr. Berglas was a teacher of mathematics and biology at the Voorheesville Central School, principal of Voorheesville Junior - Senior High School, superintendent of Voorheesville schools, superintendent of the Granby, Mass. Public Schools and superintendent of the Town of Harwich, Mass. Public Schools.

Dorothy Anne Mancini, 92, of Rotterdam, NY, passed away on Sept 12, 2019. After raising a family, she returned to the work force at the Schenectady County Community College, working in the Begley Library and retiring as Executive Secretary to the Library Director with 24 years of service.

Charlotte Louise Sauve passed away Monday October 1, 2019, at the age of 86. She worked for General Electric in Pittsfield MA, until her marriage in 1956.  Charlotte worked as the food manager at Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Senior High School, retiring in 1997.

Harold G. Beyer Jr., 73, of Delmar, passed away September 18, 2019. Born in Forest Hills Gardens, Hal moved to the Capital Region to begin his legal career in Albany County. Most of Hal's professional career included representing teachers' labor unions and litigating to protect educator rights.

Phoebe Dare Anderson, 105, of Melrose, died on Tuesday, September 24, 2019. She began her career teaching at the Horace Mann School in New York City. In her first year, she was recruited by the Emma Willard School, to move to Troy and introduce an innovative penmanship program into the school's elementary division. She concluded at Emma Willard in 1943 and during World War II, she volunteered for the American Red Cross helping locate prisoners of war. In 1955, Mrs. Anderson joined the Lansingburgh school system, teaching fifth grade at the Haskell School, and later directing the Lansingburgh Resource Center, where she managed one of the largest federally funded Title I reading programs in New York State. She retired in 1984.

Emily Doris (Hemke) Neumann, 93, of Albany, passed away September 20, 2019. Emily was born on May 11, 1926, in Hampton, Va. Emily taught fifth grade math and English at Genet Elementary School in East Greenbush.

Laurie Cooper, 71, passed away Saturday, September 21, 2019. Laurie worked at Hillside Elementary School for 28 years before retiring in 2011. She enjoyed playing canasta and spending time with her family.

Herman of Rotterdam passed away Monday, September 23, 2019. After high school, Carl served in the United States Navy. For 30 years, Carl taught and later supervised social studies for the Guilderland Central School District. He also served for a time as supervisor of student teachers at SUNY Albany.

Lois Neufeld, 89, of Edgewater, Florida,  died September 22, 2019. She held teaching positions in Elizabethtown, KY, Columbia, MO and Denver, CO. Her family finally settled in Schenectady, NY where Lois taught in the Schenectady Public Schools and Niskayuna Public Schools before ending her career as an administrator at Brown School, a private elementary school.

Paul Erwin Tyner, 88,  of Glenville, New York, passed away on September 22, 2019. Paul first taught fifth grade at Cato-Meridian Central School. From 1962 until 1988, Paul was a physics, chemistry and electronics teacher at Schalmont High School. Following retirement, Paul taught electronics at Schenectady Community College. He also taught computer science to female inmates at the Schenectady County Jail to provide practical skills for future employment.

William H. Broland Jr., 88, formerly of Niskayuna, died on Sunday, September 22, 2019. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Korean War, as a meteorologist in Morocco. Bill started his teaching career at South High in Glens Falls, later teaching for many years at the South Colonie Central School District High School, retiring in 1987.

After teaching at Colorado State University, Tim worked at  SUNY Empire State College, as one of its earliest educators and administrators. Dennis "Frank" McCarthy, 88, of Colonie, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1954. Dennis began his career in education as a schoolteacher at the Shenendehowa School District. After a few years, he accepted a position with the South Colonie Central School District at the high school in the Social Studies Department. He also taught at Lisha Kill and Sand Creek Schools. In addition to teaching, Dennis served as vice principal at both Vincentian Institute and Lisha Kill, serving the freshman class. He retired from the South Colonie Central School District after more than 30 years of service.

Marie Eva Sturm of Wilton died July 16, 2019, at age 94. Marie was born in 1925 in Prague, Czechoslovakia and lived through the Nazi occupation in World War II. Her best friend in childhood was Renata, a Jewish girl. At great peril Marie continued seeing Renata after Jews were expelled from school. Renata died under the Nazis on September 6, 1943. Marie had a 31-year career as a social worker in the Schenectady City elementary schools.

Edna Yamin (nee Watson), 91, of Troy, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2019. She operated L'Ecole de Musique - her original and highly-regarded musical pre-kindergarten - from her home on Myrtle Avenue in Troy in the mid-1970s. In 1984, she joined the Troy public school system, where she taught kindergarten until her retirement in the early 1990s.

Roslyn Moser, 83, a longtime resident of Berne, died Friday, August 16, 2019. Mrs. Moser worked many years at Ellis Hospital as a Registered Nurse. After moving to Berne in 1969 she became the elementary school nurse for Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School, a position she enjoyed for over 20 years.

Helen Jean Van Deusen, 94, died August 6, 2019.  Helen taught kindergarten at George D. Ryder Elementary of the Cobleskill Central School system for her entire 44-year teaching career.  After retirement in 1990, she developed a literacy program for at-risk juveniles at the Summit Shock Facility and took great satisfaction in teaching many young men to read for the first time.

Robert "Bob" R. Salamone, 69, of Edgartown, Mass. and formerly of Delmar, N.Y. passed away July 24, 2019. He was a teacher, coach and house leader at the Bethlehem Central School District for 33 years, retiring in 2007. Bob coached football, softball and middle school basketball during his tenure in the Bethlehem schools. Bob built a playground at Slingerlands School and planted and maintained a garden at the Early Learning Center.

Richard James Newport, 83, of North Greenbush, died on August 3, 2019. Dick was educated in the Albany schools and joined the Army near the end of the Korean War. He taught at George Washington School in Brunswick and remained in that position from 1966 until his retirement in 1995. During the following fourteen years he served as a substitute elementary teacher in the Berlin Central School District, several times filling long-term positions.

Sarah Alexis Foster of Harrison left a mark on the world in many significant ways, though just 27 years old. Tragically, this beautiful soul was abruptly taken from all those who knew and loved her on February 15, 2019 in an accident in New York City. For the last four years, Sarah taught 6th grade social studies at Louis M. Klein Middle School, Harrison Central School District, Harrison NY, where she also coached girls volleyball.

William (Bill) Thomas Kirchgasser, 79, of Colton, NY (formerly of Potsdam), died January 14, 2019. After a year of teaching at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz, in 1969 Bill began his long and distinguished career as a Professor in the Geology Department at SUNY Potsdam, Chairing the Department from 1985 to 2000, and retiring in 2004 as a Full Professor.

He enjoyed a 30-year career at Brighton High School in Rochester as a teacher and guidance counselor. Lenahan, 78, of Herkimer and The Villages in Florida, also a former Clifton Park resident, died on July 21, 2019. He was born in Schenectady, on November 18, 1940 and was retired as Professor of Criminal Justice from Herkimer County Community College in Herkimer. Thomas served honorably with the United States Air force from 1960-1982, retiring as a Captain.

Francis H. "Sonny" Garney, 92, of Delanson, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2019. Born in Plattsburgh, NY, he served his country honorably in the Navy near the end of World War II. Sonny was a longtime custodian and school bus driver for the Schalmont School District, retiring in 1988.

Alexandria K. (Myers) Grimmick, of Watervliet, died Saturday, July 13, 2019, at the age of 33. She served internships in social work with the Outreach Center of Equinox, Inc. in Albany; the Albany County Department of Children, Youth and Families: Child Protective Services; the Albany City School District-Albany High School Night School Program, and the Trinity Alliance in Albany where Alex developed and implemented a financial literacy program for elementary aged children in Trinity's after school program. Her employment included the Albany County Department for Children, Youth and Families as a caseworker; The College of Saint Rose as an adjunct social work professor and most recently, as a client support specialist with the Albany County Department of Social Services.

Wayne Lennebacker, 78, of Altamont, passed on July 18, 2019. He was born in Ilion, N.Y. and grew up in Cooperstown. He had a long career in photography; was on the faculty of the Art Dept. at SUNY Albany and worked at GE and CR&D as a Corporate photographer.

Mary Graton Comstock, 97 of Saint Augustine, Florida, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 4, 2019. On May 21, 1943, she entered in the U.S. Army Air Corps. and served in the European Theatre during World War II as an Air/EVAC Nurse. Following her military service, she worked at the V.A. Hospital in Albany, and subsequently, Memorial Hospital in Albany until 1970 when she became a professor of nursing at Hudson Valley Community College (H.V.C.C.). She retired from H.V.C.C. in 1985.

She worked as a recording secretary at the Brooklyn Army Base, later moved to Guilderland where she served the Guilderland Central School District in various administrative capacities and ultimately as an Executive Assistant to the Superintendent.

She retired in 2006 from the Fulton County Clerk's Office.

Ms. Harrison was born April 8, 1942 in Schenectady, New York, and taught high school speech and drama in New York and later served with the American Red Cross as a “Donut Dolly” in Seoul, Korea. After relocating to Harrisonburg, VA, she taught in the City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County school systems.

Winnie obtained a degree in music education and taught piano for many years, in Amsterdam, Albany, the Loudonville School, and the Albany Conservatory of Music. Later in life she began a second career as a Social Studies teacher at St. Joseph's School in Green Island and Columbia High School.

He went on to receive his master's degree from SUNY Oswego, and taught in the East Greenbush Central School District for more than 20 years, retiring in 1988.

She was born on November 9, 1934, in Brooklyn and taught in Tennessee, Japan, and Pennsylvania before moving to Latham to settle and raise her family. She resided in Latham for over 40 years, working as an elementary school teacher in the North Colonie school district until her retirement in 1989.

She was born on October 30, 1922 in Switzerland and after service in the Swiss Army Women's Corps during World War II, she served in the Swiss Foreign Service. On June 13, 2019, Don Whitlock, 83, of Altamont, died at home  Don taught high school English in both Tupper Lake and Lake Placid. He moved to Albany bringing his family to live in the city while he completed his masters' degree. During those two years of study, he worked in the Student Financial Aid office resulting in an offer to fill the position of director when it became vacant, a job he held until retirement.

At the time of his death, Jonathan was employed by the New York City Education Department as a school social worker. Before that he worked for Henry Street Settlement House in Manhattan. His years as a guidance counselor at Brooklyn Preparatory High School were his most rewarding.

At Bethesda Hospital in Cincinnati, she was part of the surgical nursing division and served as a nursing instructor. Later in her life, she left nursing for teaching, becoming an elementary school teacher in Galway Central School district from 1994-2004, where she helped to pioneer multi-age classrooms of first and second grade students.

Edward R. Cepiel, 77, of Cohoes, died Sunday, May 19, 2019. He taught Physics, Biology and Science for 40 years at Troy High School, retiring in 2003. While teaching at Troy High School he was the head coach for Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track for 35 years. He was a licensed barber, barbering in college and beyond during his summers off from school and later full time after retiring from teaching. Ed was a veteran of the United States Army and attained the rank of Captain prior to his discharge.

Sherry Penney and James Livingston, well-known for their exceptional accomplishments while living in Massachusetts, passed away last week, the middle of May, 2019, at their Florida home. They were overcome by carbon monoxide from a car with a keyless ignition system. Dr. Penney, 81, was chancellor of UMass Boston and the first female vice chancellor in the SUNY system (64 campuses and 400,000 students) as Vice Chancellor for Academic Programs, Policy and Planning. She was Associate Provost at Yale University from 1976 to 1982.

Tony wrote for the Schenectady Gazette focusing on current events and worldly matters.

Mae Burgess, 86, of Niskayuna, went into the arms of the Lord Friday, May 10, 2019. She started her career as an engineering assistant at General Electric in Schenectady. She retired from Niskayuna Central Schools, where she worked as a computer operator for the business office. Mae loved to sing. She sang for many years in the St. Kateri Tekawitha choir and the Choraliers of Schenectady.

She was active in Dairyman's League Cooperative Association, National Milk Federation and American Institute of Cooperatives, traveling to half of the United States to work on some of their programs. Florence drove school bus for 10 years.

Federico Saburro, 92, of Rotterdam, passed away May 9, 2019. Freddie enlisted in the Navy with the members of his baseball team on January 29, 1945. All 14 returned home safely after the war. He was camera operator, crew chief, lighting director and jack of all trades behind the scenes at WRGB- the first television station in the nation. He joined the union when he began there in 1952 and was a tireless champion of NABET Local 21 and the national union. Freddie often held more than two jobs and was most fond of his teaching job at Woodlawn Middle School.

He then worked as a bus driver for the Shenendehowa School District for 30 years and finished his working career as a groundskeeper for the Town of Halfmoon.

Jane T. Caruvana, 82, of Glenville, passed away April 24, 2019. After college, she began her career at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Mass. In 1973, she moved to the Capital district. For 20 years, Jane was a teacher for the visually impaired at B.O.C.E.S.

Gertrude Triller, 92, passed away April 16, 2019. After employment as an elementary school teacher in Boston, she went on a great adventure. She traveled by ship to Japan where she served as a recreational director with the 8th Army Special Services during the Korean War. She worked with special needs children at O.D. Heck Developmental Center in Schenectady, and later with the Head Start Program for children in Rutland, Vt. She also taught at Sunshine Nursery School in Proctor, Vt. in the early eighties.

She began her teaching career in Pennsylvania, and then dedicated herself to 28 years of teaching the children of Niskayuna when she moved to New York, totaling a 40 year career. Although she taught all grades, she found her calling as a first grade teacher at Birchwood School.

On April 3, 2019, Mrs. Lucy Sneed DeNuzzo, 96, passed away. She resided over half a century in East Greenbush, NY and was born in Hot Coal (Raleigh County), WV. She was raised in the town of Matoaka and went on to become a public high school teacher in both her home state and the state of New York, teaching English, typing, shorthand, and business arithmetic.

 John Clark Civill, of New Baltimore, went to be with his Lord on April 1, 2019, at the age of 76. John taught math in the Coxsackie-Athens school district from 1964 until his retirement in June 1998. John spent 15 years in his "retirement" working at Matchless Stove and Chimney in Glenmont.

Irwin Weinstein, 90, of Albany, passed away on March 13, 2019. During 33 years of service for the New York City Board of Education, he served as a teacher, teacher in charge, assistant principal, and principal of PS 151K in Brooklyn, the last of these jobs from 1974 through his retirement in 1990. He then worked as children's librarian for ten years, for the Queens Borough Public Library.

Lawrence J. Mulvaney, 95, of Schenectady, died Tuesday, March 26, 2019. He served in the U. S. Marines during World War II. After the war, he began his work as teacher and coach at Agawam (Massachusetts) High School. The next year he accepted a job offer from the Schenectady City School District to work at Mont Pleasant High School, coaching and teaching until his retirement in 1989.

She also worked as an R.N. at Memorial Hospital, St. Anne's Institute and for South Colonie Schools.

Dian Marie Dunn Dippold, 73, of Rexford, died Saturday, March 30, 2019. She was an incredibly talented pianist and was well-known locally for her musical abilities. After teaching in several school districts around the area, she finally settled into the education community at Waterford-Halfmoon, and taught full time there until becoming a mother, and then as a substitute teacher for many years thereafter.

Martin B. Cohen, 81, passed away at Falls Church, Virginia on Sunday, March 24, 2019. Born in Albany, Martin was an educator throughout his career. He began as a teacher at Giffen Elementary and Hackett Middle School in the Albany City System. He would later become a professor of American history at George Mason University for more than 35 years until his retirement.

Born in Batchellerville, NY on June 22, 1918, Maude worked the sound controls at WRGB in Schenectady during WWII, but her true vocation was being an elementary school teacher and reading specialist at the Draper School in Rotterdam, NY for over 20 years.

David Flege Thomson, 75, of Liberty, NY, died March 12, 2019. After two years of active service in the Army, one including Vietnam service with a Bronze Star award, David returned to begin an over forty year career in College Student Affairs at Gettysburg College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Central Ohio Technical College, the Newark Campus of the Ohio State University, and Sullivan County Community College.

Frances E. Wright, 98, formerly of Waterford, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2019, in Chapel Hill, N.C. During World War II, she worked at the Watervliet Arsenal as a technician inspecting and calibrating shell casings. She was later employed as a secretary at both Waterford High School and the Waterford Water Works.

Richard Suprunowicz, 91, of Schenectady, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2019. Dick served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Dick then began his career in education, first working for the Schenectady School District at Central Park Junior High teaching math and science. He then went to work at Mont Pleasant High School teaching math and coaching basketball, golf, tennis, and bowling. He continued on to Linton High School as a math teacher and retired as Assistant Principal in 1984.

Frederick A. Guay, 82, of Richmondville, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2019. Frederick joined the United States Marines in 1953 and served his country before being honorably discharged in 1956. After graduating from college, Frederick worked at SUNY Cobleskill as an Instructional Support Technician for 33 years, retiring in 1995.

Paul Volk, 91, of Scotia, passed away March 12, 2019. Paul served in the US Navy as a hospital corpsman. Following college graduation, Paul started teaching phys ed at Wheelerville School in Caroga Lake. He then moved to Boston where he began teaching and coaching in the Lincoln-Sudbury Schools. Paul taught and coached at Schalmont High School for the rest of his teaching career. Paul was extremely proud of his past co-ownership of Sherman's Caroga Lake Amusement Park and Morris Foodarama.

Dennis T. (Tom) Connelly, 89, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2019, in Greenville, South Carolina. Tom had a long career in education in Schenectady, including serving as Principal of both Elmer Avenue and Pleasant Valley Elementary Schools. Later in his career, Tom moved into senior administrative roles with the Schenectady City School District.

Richard "Dick" Stipano, 76, of Ballston Spa, passed away on March 9, 2019, at his winter home in Aiken, S.C. After college, he taught in Binghamton, returning to the area to teach at Mechanicville City Schools for the next 39 years. He was the Mechanicville Red Raiders Varsity football, and boys/girls track coach for many years. Following his passion for football, he was a coach for the Albany Metro Mallers, R.P.I., the LaSalle Institute, and HVCC, ending his coaching career at Stillwater Central Schools.

On March 8, 2019 Sylvia Aufiero Matousek, 76, of DeWitt, died. Born and raised in Ballston Spa, Sylvia was a teacher in the North Syracuse Central School District for 46 years. She taught at Lakeshore Road Elementary School and Gillette Road Middle School. She was a well-known and respected labor leader, who worked as an activist all of her adult life. President of the North Syracuse Education Association for 37 years, she also served on the NYSUT Board of Directors for 20 years. She led a teachers strike in 1976, for which she and five local leaders served a ten day sentence in Jamesville Penitentiary. It continues to be the only teacher's strike in Onondaga County.

After receiving his master's degree, he became assistant superintendent for business in the Mohonasen School District.

It's where his passion for coaching was experienced by hundreds of baseball players for over 25 years at Schenectady County Community College.

Mrs. Maynard also taught at Herkimer County BOCES.

In 2006 Mary's family moved to Glenville, NY. She worked for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District in food service, as a playground monitor, and as a teacher's aide helping elementary special education students.

For several years she worked at the University of Vermont in Burlington, as a Nursing Instructor, teaching medical and surgical nursing. In 1978 she was affiliated with the Carver Community Health Center in Schenectady. She was active in the community as Health Coordinator for the Head Start Health Program in Schenectady County.

Robert D. Burgess, 88, of Niskayuna, passed away February 18, 2019. Mr. Burgess was born in New York City and came to Niskayuna in 1956, and worked for the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. Subsequently he was the Head of Computer Operations at Mechanical Technology. He later joined the State University of New York at Albany computing center, retiring in 1995.

H. Fred Bartle, 87, of Albany, died Monday, February 18, 2019. After graduating from NYS College for Teachers (now University at Albany), Fred began his 30-year career teaching at SUNY Oswego. He was chair of the political science department three different times.

Isaac G. Racela MD, 83, of Loudonville, entered into eternal life on Sunday, February 17, 2019. He was a well-known physician (general surgery) in the Capital District with his private practice in Troy and most recently worked at the Van Rensselaer Manor. Dr. Racela was also the former medical director for the Troy City School District.

Vincent "Vince" C. Liuzzi, 87, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away February 17, 2019. Vince joined the military, serving during the Korean War as an aircraft technician for five years. He was employed at the Watervliet Arsenal working in teaching and administrative positions, retiring after 38 years. Later, he taught as an adjunct professor at Hudson Valley Community College and LaSalle Institute in Troy.

Richard E. "Rit" Krosky, 68, at rest February 16, 2019. A lifelong area resident, Rit was born in Schenectady on January 12, 1951. He was a Police Officer for 23 years for the Town of Rotterdam. Rit was later employed by the Mohonasen School District for another 15 years where he was a security officer.

William J. Spence III "Bill", 78, of Voorheesville, passed away February 7, 2019. Known as a master of the hammered dulcimer, Bill is often credited with the folk instrument's revival in the 1970s. He served in the U.S. Army Security Agency from 1962 to 1965. From 1965 to 1998 Bill worked as an audio-visual and computer graphics specialist at the State University of New York at Albany.

Clara Provenzano, 85, of Colonie, passed away February 14, 2018. Born February 15, 1933 in Amantea, Italy, Clara and family migrated to the U.S. in 1966. She was employed by New York State (O.G.S), the University Heights Nursing Home and also by the Albany Public Schools.

John Joseph "Jack" Brown, 76, passed away January 21, 2019 in Nashville, TN. In 1964 he joined the Peace Corps and was assigned to Columbia, South America. For two years, he worked with youth as a physical education teacher. Upon returning home, he was employed by Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth as a counselor after having worked at Schenectady City School District.

Gladys G. Howe, 97, of Westville and a native of Cooperstown, passed away Sunday night, February 10, 2019. Raised on the family farm, Gladys first attended a one room schoolhouse. She taught primary grades in the Bethlehem Center and Glenmont Elementary Schools in the Bethlehem Central School District in Delmar.

Lawrence H. Joyce, 84, of Cobleskill, died Wednesday, February 13, 2019. Larry was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1956 until 1958. Larry taught history at Watervliet City School District High School from 1961 until 1966. He then was a professor for many years at SUNY Cobleskill. He began this career as an assistant professor of economics and then moved into fulltime professor of sociology and history. In 2005, he retired as department chair for social sciences.

Madeline "Maddie" Benson, 100, of West Sand Lake, died Monday, February 11, 2019. Maddie was a fourth grade teacher for 30 years, most recently in the East Greenbush Central Schools. After retiring she developed a special literacy through the arts program and brought it into area elementary schools.

Graham Duncan, 96, of Ithaca, passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2019. After completing his doctorate in English, he taught for three years at Russell Sage College and thirty-five years at SUNY Oneonta.  He retired from full-time teaching in 1991.  His undergraduate education was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the 87th Infantry Division in Europe.

John Milton Gould, 73, of Valatie, died February 7, 2019. After 45 years of teaching history, John retired from the Chatham Central School District, having been recognized as the longest-serving teacher in the district.

Robert E. Pennock, 92, of North Greenbush, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2019. Dr. Pennock was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was the Associate Dean for Continuing Education at the Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, N.Y. Later, Dr. Pennock was Dean of the Sage Evening College and Professor of Philosophy for 18 years before his retirement in 1994.

In loving memory of Raymond H.Werking Sr. who passed away 20 years ago today on February 12, 1999. He became known as 'Bus Driver Ray' because he drove a school bus for 46 consecutive years, a national record for longevity. In recognition, the East Greenbush School District Transportation Center was dedicated to him in 2003.

He started his career at the Journal Press in Ballston Spa and later worked for Denton Publications, Acme Press, Saratoga Printing and the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex (WSWHE)  print shop, retiring in 1999.

John "Buddy" Salemme, 86, of Clifton Park passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2019. He joined the Army, fought in Korea and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was the director of student services for a year at Hudson Valley Community College and then spent the next 32 years in Guidance at Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady.

John F. Galish, 78, of Saratoga, passed away Monday morning, February 4, 2019. He began his career teaching music in NYC and Long Island, then relocated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he was a Professor of music at Dalhousie University. He returned to upstate N.Y. where he built an award-winning music program at Oppenheim-Ephratah Central School and served administrative leadership roles in Whitesboro, St. Johnsville, Hadley-Luzerne, Fallsburg, and the Bergenfield, NJ, school district.

Richard C. O'Neil, 88, of Guilderland, died Friday, January 25, 2019. Dr. O'Neil initially taught at Rice University and then joined the University at Albany faculty, where he retired in 2006 having been professor of mathematics for 38 years.

Leonard Symansky, 88, of Delmar, died on Tuesday, February 5, 2019. Dr. Symansky served as an assistant professor at The College of Saint Rose in Albany where he taught French until 1975. From 1977-1997, Dr. Symansky taught at Columbia-Greene Community College where he eventually became full professor of modern languages, including French, Spanish, Italian, German and Russian.

Paul J. Loatman Jr., 75, of Mechanicville, passed away Monday morning, February 4, 2019. A highly respected educator and Head of the Upper School at Doane Stuart for many years, Dr. Loatman had taught a variety of subjects. He was also an adjunct professor at Union College, SUNY Albany, Schenectady Community College, and The College of Saint Rose.

Conrad F. Bader, 82, formerly of Seward, died Monday, January 28, 2019. Conrad was a longtime teacher of mathematics and social studies at Sharon Springs Central School. He also was employed as a park ranger at Glimmerglass State Park in Cooperstown.

Irene DeBoer, 88, passed away on January 06, 2019. Upon college graduation in 1952, Irene accepted a teaching position in Grafton, MA. She later joined the Niskayuna School System as a substitute teacher. She stepped up to teaching full time and used her salary to fund the family's first trip to Europe.

Carol (Hines) Coleman, 83, of Guilderland, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2019. After graduating from college she moved to Dillingham, Alaska and worked as a school teacher for five years. She returned to New York and taught for 35 years at Voorheesville Elementary, retiring in 2000.

Jean Todorov, 90, of Glenville, entered into eternal rest January 15, 2019 in Fairfax, Virginia. In addition to being a devoted mother to four children, she worked for the City of Watervliet, New York State, and as a Teacher Aide for the Guilderland Central School District.

Gerard A. Brehm Sr., 81, of East Greenbush, died Monday, January 28, 2019. He was a member of the Air Force Reserves. Jerry was employed by the New York Olympic Authority in 1980, as business administrator for the Schodack School District and as  budget director for the City of Troy.

Marguerite W. Summerson, 98, of Canajoharie,  passed away January 27, 2019. Her first teaching assignment was in Hammersley Fork, PA. She taught school in the Canajoharie School System for 35 years, also working summers at Arkell & Smith Sack Factory, and in the strained foods at Beech-Nut, Inc. in the 1940's. She wrote an anonymous Local Human Interest Newspaper Column for the Cobleskill Journal called "Amy's Letter" in the early 1950's.

David J. Crandall, 85, of Saratoga Springs, NY, passed away Friday, January 25, 2019. After college graduation, he enlisted in the US Army and proudly served in Formosa. Upon returning home, he started a 32 year career in education, teaching in the Scotia Glenville School system for two years. He then went to work for the Schenectady City School District, where he was a guidance counselor, assistant principal, principal, finishing his career as assistant superintendent in charge of personnel.

Kathy A. Murphy-Rought, of Albany, died Saturday, January 12, 2019. She was a vocational rehabilitation counselor and had worked at Acces-VR, Unified Services of Rensselaer County and Albany High School. She was an unrelenting advocate for people with disabilities.

Kenneth William Jackson, 74, of Malta, passed away January 21, 2019. Ken was born on February 11, 1944, in Shipley, England. For most of his career he held a joint appointment as a Research Scientist with the New York State Department of Health, and Professor (and for a time Department Chair) in the SUNY School of Public Health.

Roseann "Rose" Helmes, 98, of East Greenbush, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019. She entered the United States Navy during World War II as a member of the Hospital Corps. She moved to East Greenbush in 1953 where she worked as a principal stenographer for the East Greenbush School District for twenty years retiring in 1983.

Judith Jenkins Young, 80, of Schenectady, died January 18, 2019. She taught reading in area schools for a number of years. Judy was proud to be certified to screen for and treat people with Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (Irlen) and was always eager to help children and adults learn the pleasure of reading. Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome is a perceptual processing disorder. It is not an optical problem. It is a problem with the brain's ability to process visual information.

Shirley Ann Grubs, of Greenville, SC, died on January 26, 2019. She was born on October 2, 1934, on Staten Island, NY. Following her college graduation, Shirley worked as an elementary school teacher outside of Rochester, teaching fourth grade, and later as a substitute teacher in Delmar.

Sophie Greco Ferrara passed away January 24, 2019. She enjoyed a long and successful tenure as a high school business teacher in both Amsterdam and Syracuse. In her early career, Sophie served as the Administrative Assistant to the Mayor of Amsterdam and spent several years during WWII in the Business Office for the US Army.

William Brian Hitchko, 66, of Ballston Spa, died suddenly while helping friends during the winter storm on Sunday, January 20, 2019. Brian's professional career included being a carpenter, a school bus driver and most recently as a truck driver at Shaker Group, Inc. in Latham.

Muriel Newcomb, of Lake George, NY, a long time teacher at West Albany and Veeder elementary schools in the South Colonie Central School District, passed away on Friday, January 18, 2019. Muriel was born on October 17, 1927. She was a schoolteacher for 32 years at several schools in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, before retiring from the South Colonie School District in 1985.

Kathleen Kelleher Riley, 84, of Latham, entered into eternal life on Sunday, January 20, 2019. Born in Glens Falls on December 11, 1934, she was the reading teacher with the Waterford Central School district for over 16 years, retiring in 1989.

Betty L. Marquart, 82, of Rittman, OH, died Monday, January 21, 2019. She taught fourth grade for nine years and taught three years in the summer reading program in the Rittman Schools. The family moved to Ballston Lake, New York in 1978 and she was a reading and math volunteer for 14 years in the Rise in Support of Education at Shenendehowa Schools.

Frances K. Winegar of Ballston Lake passed away Monday, January 21, 2019. Frances worked as a secretary and salesperson in her early years, and last worked as a hall monitor at Shenendehowa High School.

Dorothy C. von Bieberstein, 88, of Valatie, passed away December 29, 2018. After graduating from Hudson High School in 1948, she worked as a legal secretary and as a waitress. She also picked strawberries, cherries and apples in season so that she could support her horse and her car. By the late 1950's, having worked as a secretary at the Hudson Training School for Girls for several years, Dorothy was encouraged by her supervisor to apply for admission to the New York State Teachers College at Albany. Upon her graduation in 1962, she accepted a position at Hudson High School, where she taught English, retiring in 1985.

Adelheid "Dale" Gensicki from West Stephentown, passed away at the age of 92 on January 22, 2019. Dale was born in Vienna, Austria. After obtaining her GED, she began working for the Averill Park School district cafeteria in 1974. She eventually became head cook at Averill Park High School.

Michael Ambrosio, 64, of Latham, died Monday January 21, 2019. Born in Queens, NY on June 6, 1954, he was a Physical Education Teacher at South Colonie Central High School from 1985 until his retirement in 2017. Mike also coached wrestling, track, lacrosse, and varsity football.

Ann Markopoulos, 91, of Schenectady, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2019. She worked as a bookkeeper until she married in 1951. Soon after she married, Ann moved to Schenectady where she enjoyed part-time work as a crossing guard and later as a lunch monitor in the Oneida Jr. High School.

Lucy C. Sigley, 79, of Niskayuna, passed away Monday, January 14, 2019. Born on September 18, 1939, in Allentown, Pa., she married and was a grade school teacher before her son was born. After, Lucy left teaching to raise her son, working as a substitute teacher while he was in school.

Margaret "Peg" K. Lazarou, 90, passed away January 13, 2019. She was a music teacher in the Greater Amsterdam School District for 32 years and was the Director of Music at the Second Presbyterian Church for many decades. Peg, also, taught private piano and vocal lessons.

Donna Marie Accuosti, 55 of Delmar, died Tuesday January 15, 2019. She spent her entire career in education, most recently at the Greenville Central School District as the assistant superintendent.

Cheryl Joy Skinner, 47, of Cameron, North Carolina and formerly of Albany, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2019. Cheryl was born on February 28, 1971, in New Rochelle, NY. She was a master's graduate of SUNY Albany and was employed as a dedicated special education teacher.

John R. Johnas, 71, of Brunswick, passed away January 11, 2019. John was born in Albany and grew up in Rensselaer. In 1968, he served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army in Vietnam. John retired from the Albany Police Department after 21 years of service and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 17 years. His retirement job was as a night security guard with Tamarac Schools.

Margaret "Pinkie" Merriam Moon, 98, a longtime resident of Corinth, died Friday, January 4, 2019. Born Jan. 29, 1920 in Syracuse, Pinkie began substitute teaching in public and private schools in NJ. She then taught 4th grade in the Old Tappan, NJ school district until her retirement in June of 1982.
