Eugene Peter Whitney, 91, of Saratoga Springs, died November 17, 2016. Eugene was drafted to serve in the Navy during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he became a business teacher and athletic coach at several high schools and colleges.

Leroy Pelton died at his home in Henderson, Nevada, in December of 2016. From 1966-1973 he was an assistant professor in the Psychology Department at S.U.N.Y. Albany.

John L. Meid, 76, of Albany, died on December 2, 2016. Born in West Lafayette, IN, he taught philosophy at S.U.N.Y. Albany and at other local colleges.

Carolynn Whitehurst, 79,  passed away in Albany, NY, on the evening of December 26, 2016. Connie taught at Dutchess Community College, served as Director of the Ulster County Youth Bureau, and Executive Director of the Children’s Home of Kingston. 

Edward H. Worthen, 86, a longtime resident of South Hero, Vermont, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2016. From 1970 until his retirement in 1993 he was an associate professor of Latin American Studies and Spanish at SUNY-Plattsburgh.



Sonia Basko, 43, of Cohoes, formerly of Rochester, passed away December 29, 2016. After teaching at Chesapeake High School in Pasadena, Maryland, Sonia joined the staff of Penfield High School as an English teacher. As president of the Penfield Education Association, Sonia headed a team of leaders selected for NYSUT’s Local Action Project. In 2014 Sonia joined NYSUT’s staff as special projects coordinator. 

Lucretia "Kris" Elizabeth Winfield, 90, passed on Saturday, December 31, 2016. She worked as a teacher for a variety of school districts before moving to Albany in 1965. She later worked as a substitute teacher in the South Colonie School System.

Gladys Downs MacFee, 85, of West Glenville, died Thursday, December 29, 2016. She was employed at Scotia Schools, Acme Press, Schenectady County and NYS Tax and Finance as a Data Processer. 

Margaret Dickson, 93, of Schenectady, formally of Buffalo, passed away Friday, December 30, 2016. She was retired from the State University of Buffalo, where she worked as an Office Manager in the Guidance Department.


Marilyn Resnik, 86, of Colonie, died December 28, 2016. After raising a family and enjoying a long and rewarding career as an elementary school librarian in Levittown, N.Y., she retired to Albany.

Laurie Anne Sicko-Szoke, 59,  of Kennett Square, PA, died Saturday December 24, 2016. Born in Hoosick Falls, NY, and raised in Niskayuna NY, Laurie went on to work at the Wolfeboro School System in NH as a teacher.  

Julia L. Ferguson, 86, of Clifton Park and formerly of Waterford, passed away Friday evening, December 23, 2016. Born and educated in Troy, she had been employed at the cafeteria at Waterford-Halfmoon School.

Corinne (Ricci) Cossac, of Voorheesville, born on September 21, 1931, died Friday, December 23, 2016. Corinne was employed in many places and vocations, a few of which include managing the cafeteria at Bethlehem Middle School and making pizzas at Smitty's in Voorheesville.


Gerolene (Gerry) E. Snavely passed away December 24, 2016. She was 95 years old and was currently residing in Ballston Spa, NY. After the birth of her daughter, she became a cashier at her old high school cafeteria in St. Louis, Missouri for the next 41 years.

Kelli Jean Lewis, 49, of Stillwater, died Thursday, December 22, 2016. Kelli was a kitchen aide for the Stillwater Central School District for a number of years.

Rose Marie Lamorella of East Berne passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2016. She was a long time educator for the Albany City School District at the Adult Learning Center.

Nancy (Kelly) Kocher, 59, of Washington, DC, passed away Monday, December 12, 2016. She worked at Vanderheyden Hall, O.D. Heck and various local daycare centers. Her latest employment was with George Washington University.

Kim Elizabeth “Liz” Chorny, 53, of Halfmoon, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2016. She was employed in Food Service at the Shenendahowa School District.

Marta Banks, 64, of Wynantskill, passed away December 20, 2016. Marta began a career as a librarian at Florida International University. She would go on to work at the State University of New York at Albany and Robert C. Parker School. 

Virginia F. (Van Dyke ) Bombard, 92, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, formerly of East Greenbush, died Saturday, December 17, 2016. She retired as a payroll clerk for New York State Retirement after 15 years of service. Also, she worked for Columbia High School.

Betty Jane Vedder, 89, of Alplaus, passed away December 17, 2016. When her children were older she became a school librarian at Niskayuna High School.

William J. Smith, Jr., 49, of Schenectady, died Thursday, December 15, 2016. He had attended Mont Pleasant High School and had worked for the Schenectady Public School District for many years. 

Frank T. Lane, 99, of Centennial, CO, passed away December 14, 2016.  He was an educator for 38 years, first as an elementary school teacher, then an associate professor of education at his alma mater, State College of Education Brockport, and then in the central administration of the State University of New York in Albany.

Clarence J. Spain, 87, of Glenville, passed away on December 15, 2016. Clarence was a school psychologist for many years and worked in the Bethlehem School District for most of his career. 

Charles G. Barron, 73, of Ballston Lake, died Tuesday, December 13, 2016. He retired from the Shenendehowa Central School District where he had been a teacher for 38 years.

Martin L. "Marty" Singer, 80, of Eastham, MA, passed away on December 8, 2016. Marty served in the U.S. Army prior to graduating from Syracuse University in 1960. He was a high school guidance counselor at Maple Hill High School in Schodack for over thirty years.

Valerie Frances (Mauss) Sloan, age 88, of Albany, died on Saturday, December 10, 2016. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell with a B.A. degree in education and taught elementary school in Loudonville until 1953.

Deleo "Dee" Ruth Gravink, 91, of Saco, Maine, passed away December 14, 2016. Dee taught high school social studies and geography for four different upstate New York schools over the course of thirty-one years. They were Pine Valley Central in South Dayton, North Collins Central, Perry Central and Niskayuna Central.

Jean Brown Bovee, 83, retired Duanesburg Elementary teacher, passed away in Dover, NH on December 8,  2016. 

Louise White Esiason, 86, of Argyle, passed away Friday, December 9, 2016. Louise began teaching nursing at Castleton (Vermont) State College in the early 1970's until her retirement in 1985. 

Joan Asfoury Betor Weaver, 74, of Lake George, passed away December 7, 2016. She had a rewarding career teaching third and fifth grades at Skano and Tesago Elementary Schools in the Shenendehowa Central School District. 

Debra L. Plummer, 59, of Ballston Spa, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2016. Debbie was a substitute teacher for the Ballston Spa Central Schools and the Division Street Elementary School in Saratoga Springs.

Shirley M. Bare, 88, of Broadalbin, passed away December 3, 2016.  She retired in 1995 from Johnstown Knitting Mill where she worked as a seamstress. After retirement she worked at the Gloversville High School in the cafeteria.

Barbara Stibbe Harrington, 95, of Lawrenceville, GA, passed away on November 22, 2016. Barbara taught high school Home Economics in Mayfield, NY, and then in Lake Placid, NY. 

Samuel DiSibio, 95, of East Patchogue, NY, died November 22, 2016. He was an English teacher at Patchogue-Medford High School and night professor at Adelphi University and Dowling College. He served in the Army's 321st Infantry during World War II.

On December 2, 2016, in the afternoon, Bosco Tjan, 50, a University of Southern California professor, was fatally stabbed by a USC student. Tjan was known for researching the responses people have to vision loss caused by multiple conditions, such as macular degeneration.

Ann M. Fish, 78, of Colonie, entered into eternal life on Monday, November 28, 2016. Ann was a registered child care nurse with St. Catherine's in Albany for several years. She also worked with the City of Albany as a school crossing guard and later with the South Colonie School District as a cafeteria monitor. 

Robert V. Sands, 77, of Boynton Beach FL, passed from this life on November 27, 2016.  Bob taught high school business for two years prior to a fulfilling career at Alfred State College from 1964-1995.  From 1995-2008 he was a management professor and assistant dean at RPI in Troy, NY. 

Helen C. Evans, 99, of Schenectady, died Monday, November 28, 2017. Helen practiced nursing in several hospitals while her husband was stationed overseas in World War II. Helen worked as a school nurse at Delaware Valley Central School. After more than 20 years with the school system, Helen retired to Bradenton, Florida.

Virginia M. "Ginny" Cable, 69, of Rotterdam, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2016. She worked 20 years as a bus driver for the Guilderland School District. 

Denis Gilbert Young, 60, of Rexford, passed away Thursday, December 1, 2016. He was currently a technology teacher for the Shenendahowa Central School District. Denis was an active firefighter for the John McLane Hose Company.

John C. Barbagallo, 73, of Albany, passed away peacefully Friday, December 2, 2016. John worked as a head mechanic for Freihofers for 29 years. Upon retiring he worked for South Colonie Schools and Daughter's of Sarah Nursing Home.

Patricia A. "Patti" Turi, 58, of Stony Creek passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016. Patricia taught Biology at St. Anne's, Fort Ann, and lastly Warrensburg for many years before retiring.

Vivian H. Hansen, 66, of Albany, died November 28, 2016. Vivian found her calling as a teacher and taught art to elementary school children in the Albany City School district for 35 years.


Robert Patrick Lanni, age 86, of Guilderland, passed away November 24, 2016. Robert was a professor of physics at SUNY Albany, from 1953 until 1992.

Grace Hilt Mack died November 25, 2016. She was a teacher of middle school in Croton-on Hudson and Dobbs Ferry, NY. Later Grace was an Adjunct Professor for SUNY. In the 1990's, Grace went back to teaching, where she taught at Mont Pleasant Middle School in Schenectady.

Carol Ann Kentile, 69, of Richfield Springs, formerly of Schoharie, NY, died Friday, November 18, 2016. Carol had a long career in education, teaching at Schoharie, Lansingburgh and in Rochester, among others. Eventually she became V.P. for Business Administration at SUNY Cobleskill.

Helen M. Ferraro of Rotterdam passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at the age of 95. Later in life she worked as a teacher's aide at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Schenectady.

Margaret "Peggy" DeMaria, 81, of Delmar,  passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2016. Born and educated in Albany,  Peggy worked for the Bethlehem School District for many years.

Robert J. Forster, 87, of Guilderland,  passed away on November 22, 2016. Bob deferred high school graduation in order to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps (1947-49). He taught and coached at C.B.A., Wheelerville, Mohonasen and Shaker High Schools. 

Anna Rosenquist Muller, 81,  of North Port, FL, passed away November 20, 2016. Anna worked as a teacher's aide at the Coxsackie-Athens High School for more than 20 years.

Marilyn J. Stanley, 63, of Schenectady, died Tuesday, November 22, 2016. Early in her teaching career she taught at St. Madeleine Sophie School and at St. Gregory's School, later teaching Kindergarten and Pre-K for the Schenectady City School District. 

Henry Carr died Nov. 12, 2016 in Virginia. He was 93. Henry was an Air Force staff sergeant who served in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. He received the Air Medal and Presidential Unit Citation for flying 31 missions as a crew member aboard the B-25 Mitchell bomber. He was the supervisor of music for the South Colonie Central School District and the band director at Colonie Central High School for 31 years.

Selma "Sally" Weiss, 96, of Albany died on Tuesday, November 22, 2016. Sally had a long career at Albany Medical Center in the newborn nursery. After she retired, she became a school nurse for the Albany City School District.

Phyllis Carpentier, 79, passed away Friday, November 18, 2016. She retired after 25 years of service from the Times Union. After retirement, Phyllis continued to work part time in the South Colonie School District as a hall monitor.

Alice M. Christiana, 55, of Coeymans Hollow, passed away Wednesday, November 16, 2016. Alice worked as the director of the After School Activities Program at A.W. Becker Elementary in the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk School District for the past 17 years.

Judith "Jody" Monroe, 79, of Wake Forest, NC, passed away in November 17, 2016. As a Spanish teacher at Columbia High School in East Greenbush for 35 years, she dedicated her entire adult life to teenagers and their development and raising her daughters. 

Barbara Lorraine (Provost) Hedden, 84, of Clifton Park, died November 16, 2016. Lorraine retired from the Shenendehowa School District where she worked for 29 years.

Paulette (Cookie) Goly, 69, of Bluffton, SC,  died on November 1, 2016. She taught Physical Education at Troy High School until moving to South Carolina in 1996.

 Josephine A. Vindittie, 64, of Ravena, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2016.  Born in Albany, NY, March 28, 1952, she grew up in Glenmont and was a dedicated worker for the Bethlehem Central School District for 36 years.

Rita M. Barry, 78, of Clifton Park and formerly Huntington, L.I., passed away November 13, 2016. She served as the school nurse at Washington Elementary School in Huntington Station for almost 25 years.

Catherine M. Guay, of Schaghticoke, 84,  passed on November 15, 2016. Catherine pursued her teaching credentials at Oneonta State Teachers College and began a 26-year career, 25 of which was as a first-grade teacher at Hoosic Valley Central School.

Salvatore "Deke" DiChristina, 82, a lifelong Frankfort resident, passed away Sunday evening, November 13, 2016. From 1956-1960, Deke proudly served his country with the United States Air Force. Deke spent his entire career as a teacher, serving the Whitesboro Central School District for 33 years.

William E. "Bear" Teiper, 73, of Colonie, passed away November 10, 2016. He began his career in 1964 in the South Colonie School District at Lisha Kill Middle School, teaching 7th grade math. He continued as a math teacher at Sand Creek Middle School until his retirement in 1997. He also coached 8th grade basketball at Sand Creek Middle School and was the long-time coach of the Varsity golf team at Colonie High School.

Eleanor Arduino, 89, of Albany, entered eternal life on Friday, November 4, 2016. Born in Hazelton, Pa., Eleanor was a longtime cafeteria associate for the Plainview School District.

Dorothy Gehrt, 84, of Glenville, passed away Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Dorothy was an art teacher, spending the majority of her teaching career in the Niskayuna School District.

Maria Korhun, 91, of Colonie, and formerly of Troy, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, November 9, 2016. Born in Cherniv, Ukraine, she moved to the U.S. in November of 1952 and was a retiree from Hudson Valley Community College.

Edward S. Thomas Jr., 78, of Delmar,  died November 1, 2016.  Ed joined the faculty of the Mathematics Department at the University at Albany, S.U.N.Y., in 1969 and was still actively teaching during the current semester.

Gertrude A. Uline, 94, of Malta, passed away Monday, November 7, 2016. She worked as a secretary for General Electric in Schenectady before joining the secretarial staff at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School, advancing to administrative assistant to the principal.

 John E. Ciulik, Jr., 81, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2016 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. John taught Industrial Arts and elementary education for many years in the Norwalk-La Mirada School District in Norwalk, CA.

Natalie Tinkelman, (born Natalie Greece), age 95, of Slingerlands, died on November 6, 2016. She went to Brooklyn College where she studied biology and worked in vaccine labs during World War II. She later worked in the Albany schools for over 20 years.

Mary Louise Wren-Horick, 76, of Albany, passed away on Monday, November 7, 2016. She was employed by the State University at Albany for many years. 

Michelle M. Teal, of Altamont, passed away November 7, 2016. Michelle was born June 7, 1964. She worked for the Guilderland School District as a paraprofessional.

Michael S. Jones, 51, of Niskayuna, passed away Tuesday, November 8, 2016. He began teaching at Hackett Middle School in Albany in 1991 and Niskayuna High School in 1994 where he taught into October, 2016.

Cheryl M. Gleason Holley, 53, of Scotia, died Sunday, November 6, 2016. She was a teacher for over 30 years and began her career teaching in Albany area Catholic schools and taught for 25 years at the Thomas O'Brien Academy of Science and Technology in the Albany City School District. 

Harold F. Taber, 83, of Knox, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2016. Harold served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. In 1996 Harold retired from SUNY Albany with over 30 years of service.

Dorothy Hohman Runfola, 91, of Fredonia, died Tuesday, October 25, 2016. She was employed as a registered nurse and, later, she was a library aide at Fredonia High School, retiring at age 73 after decades of service.

Robert W. "Moe" Mosall, 91, of Guilderland, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2016. Robert proudly served with the United States Army during 1944 and 1946, participating in the Battle of the Bulge. He worked as an automobile mechanic, retiring in 1983. In addition he drove a School Bus for the Guilderland School District and the Voorheesville School District.

Sister Kathleen Duncan CSJ (Sister Kathleen Paul), 78, died Monday, October 31, 2016, in Johnson City, NY. She ended her educational career as a speech therapist at both Carondelet Educational Center in Latham, and Tioga Central School in Tioga, N.Y. 

Beverly Sprague, 84, of Saratoga Springs, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2016. Bev taught numerous piano lessons and was a substitute teacher throughout the years. She ended her years as an educator as a pre-school teacher in Florida.

Dorothy M. King, of Niskayuna, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2016. She was employed as a registered nurse by Bellevue Hospital in Niskayuna for many years, then later as a classroom instructor in nursing for Capital Region BOCES, retiring in 2012.

Eugene "Gene" Evarts Webster, of Guilderland, born on October 16, 1928, in Warsaw, NY, died on October 22, 2016. Gene held teaching positions across New York state before settling at Bethlehem Central High School where he taught social studies for 31 years.

Carolyn (Brown) Peretz, 74, of Loudonville, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2016. Carol was a beloved reading teacher in the Albany public schools for 31 years.

Robert G. Burrows, 88, of Rotterdam, died Monday, October 24, 2016. Robert was born in Bloomington, Idaho. Bob taught in Utah, California, Florida and for the US Air Force Schools in Morocco, Germany and England.

 E. James Cole Jr., of Clifton Park,  passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2016. Jim taught music in the Amherst/ Pelham regional schools and the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School System.

Paul S. Sheridan, 62, of Poestenkill died on Friday, October 21, 2016. He had served in the Army during the Vietnam Era and was discharged in 1974. His working career started at the New York State Museum in Albany and then to SUNY Albany where for 30 years Paul was a police officer, retiring in 2009.

Sondra L. "Sonnie" Walker, 69, died Wednesday, October 19, 2016, in Glenmont. She pursued a remarkable career in education, which began as an elementary and high school teacher.

Joyce Frances Karl passed away on October 13, 2016, in Santa Barbara, CA. She was born on October 21, 1938, in West Sand Lake. She retired as   the administrative assistant to the superintendent of the Santa Barbara, CA, School District. 

Dr. Clifford H. Casey, who with his wife attended to the medical needs of friends and neighbors in Voorheesville for nearly five decades, died October 8, 2016. He was 89. He was the physician for Voorheesville schools and a fixture on the sidelines at Blackbirds football games.

Alberta A. (Dearstyne) Kreiger, 95, a longtime resident of Brunswick, died Saturday, October 15, 2016. She was employed as a school bus driver by the Brittonkill Central School District and drove one of the most treacherous routes on Ford Road for several years before retiring.

Charles R. Cassidy, 79, of Albany,  passed away Saturday, October 15, 2016. Chuck taught high school English and theater at Coxsackie Athens Central School District for 10 years.

Mary C. Bosworth, 85, of Altamont, died October 16, 2016. Mary worked at the Guilderland Central High School as the Library Clerk.

Julie Horney, 68, of State College, PA, passed away  October 10, 2016. In 2014, she retired as professor of criminology and sociology from Penn State University, University Park. She had served as dean of the School of Criminal Justice at the University of Albany, S.U.N.Y., 2002-2009.

Regina Hoppe Ryan, of Glenville, passed away Saturday, October 15, 2016. Regina worked as a treasurer for the Scotia–Glenville School system, and as an aide in the Lincoln School. Regina also worked in the State University System as an administrative assistant.

Bernadine M. Olbrych, 92, formerly of Amsterdam and Hagaman, NY, died October 13, 2016, in Sarasota, FL. Bernadine taught for Amsterdam Public Schools and spent her final years of employment as a Budget Analyst for SUNY Central Administration.

Joyce Hampel Dudek, 86, of Scotia, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2016. She was born on February 28, 1930, in Cohoes and worked as a teacher in Cohoes Schools.

Emma J. Seebold, 89, of Schoharie, New York, passed away  October 20 2016. After college, Emma taught physical education at Highview Elementary School in Nanuet, New York until 1971. She then substitute taught at Schoharie Elementary School in the 1970s.

Joan "Joann" M. Green, 83, of Plattsburgh, passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2016. After graduating from college, Joann began teaching at the East Greenbush School District.

Barbara Mrozik Wolff passed away in Minneapolis, MN on October 5, 2016. After teaching math for seven years at New Lebanon, her career took her away from teaching for about twenty years, working for GE and RPI. Ultimately, she returned to the classroom, teaching information systems at Hudson Valley Community College, from where she retired several years ago.

Thomas Wendell Norton "Tom", 85, of Rexford, died October 4, 2016. He taught science at Linton High School, was a pilot, Coast Guard Auxiliary officer, and was a finalist for NYS in NASA’s Teacher in Space Program.

Marie J. (Nole) Donovan, age 84, of New Hartford and formerly of Albany, passed away October 10, 2016.  After graduating from college, Marie taught in elementary schools in Utica and Albany before teaching for thirty-five years in the South Colonie School District. 

Wayne A. Hoagland, 73, of New Smyrna Beach, FL, died October 2, 2016. Wayne taught 5th grade at the Berne-Knox-Westerlo School District for over 30 years. 

Aline C. Cardona, 71, of Delmar, died Tuesday evening, October 4, 2016. She spent several years as a secretary at Bethlehem Central High School.

Claire Marie Pion Ryan, 83, of Castleton, died October 5, 2016. She taught chemistry and biology; first in Chicopee, then at Ichabod Crane High School and completed her career teaching these subjects and math as a full Professor at Hudson Valley Community College.

Merle E. Miller, of Newport, NC, passed away on October 3, 2016. Merle joined the United States Army and served with the 101st Airborne Division. Merle taught business courses at Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar for 32.

Bernice Hafey Schwartz, 75, of Glenville,  passed away September 26, 2016. Berni worked as a substitute in the Scotia-Glenville, Ballston Spa and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake school districts for decades before retiring.

Marilyn Anne Sandberg of Malta, passed away on October 1, 2016. Born on January 14, 1932, she came to Clifton Park in 1962 where she taught English at the Shenendehowa High School for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1991.

Paul S. Girsdansky, 55, of Seward, died on Wednesday, September 28, 2016. During his initial career as a journalist, he worked at various newspapers in the area and at several other papers in New York and Maryland. "Mr. G." had been the librarian at Frankfort-Schuyler since 1997.

Marion Elizabeth Huxley, 89, of Latham, passed away September 27, 2016. Her first teaching position was at Victoria High School in Texas and her last was at Mechanicville High School. 

Roma Dina Stern, formerly of  Amsterdam, NY, died on Friday, September 30, 2016. She was employed as a teacher with the Amsterdam School District for over 20 years until her retirement. Mrs. Stern served proudly with the United States Marine Corp. during WWII and was in one of the first women classes.

Elvira E. Goliber, 91, of Latham, passed away September 28, 2016. She worked as a secretary and senior stenographer at Shaker High School in the North Colonie School District for 25 years before her retirement in 1990.

Randy G. Bush, 58, of Waterford, died on Wednesday, September 21, 2016. Randy was employed at Waterford Halfmoon School and several area businesses.

Lloyd C. Woodcock, 67, of Saratoga Springs, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016. He worked his way up over 30 years at SUNY Empire State College to become Director of Facilities before he retired in 2010.

Helen F. Szczepkowski, 75, of Albany, entered Eternal Life Tuesday, September 27, 2016. Born in Troy, Helen was a teacher for 36 years in the Watervliet City School District.

John C. Proctor, 63, of Clifton Park, died Thursday, September 22, 2016. John retired two weeks ago from the Shenendehowa Central School District where he had been a building supervisor in the East High School.

Nancy Sanaye Payeur, 68, of Schenectady, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2016. She spent many years as a stay-at-home mom raising their four daughters and also working part time at Elmer Avenue Elementary School.

Karl-Heinz E. Gerstenberger, 82, of Clifton Park, died September 23, 2016. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957. He taught German and Social Studies at Scotia Glenville High School, S.U.N.Y. Albany, U.Mass. Amherst and finally at Shenendehowa from 1974 to 1990.

Marriotte Stedman Lane, 95, of  Englewood, CO, passed away September 16, 2016. She taught pre-school and kindergarten and was education director at Head Start in Schenectady.

Lynn A. Blackwood, 70, of Ballston Lake, passed away Thursday, September 22, 2016. He was a lifelong electrician and worked for many years as a member of the maintenance staff at Saratoga High School.

Rolande P. Pilczuk, 96, of Clifton Park, passed away September 20, 2016. Born in Normandy, France, Rolande was a teacher's aide for Niskayuna High School.

Thomas Robert Harmon, 90, of Albany, died Wednesday, September, 21, 2016. Tom was a lifelong Albany resident and World War II Navy veteran. He devoted his life to serving others in occupations that included educator and administrator, special education teacher, physical therapy aide, and registered nurse. 

Gregory A. Baurle, 48, of Rotterdam, passed away on Saturday, September 17, 2016. For the past 11 years he has been employed as a mechanic with the Guilderland Central School District.

Philip N. Ford, Jr., 64, of Portland, Maine, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2016. He spent the past few years as a school crossing guard for the City of Portland.

Peter B. Kahn, 81, of Shoreham,  passed away April 27, 2016. He was a professor of physics and administrator at Stony Brook University from 1961 to 2003. 

Paul Richards Palmer, of Syracuse,  was born June 21, 1927 and passed away March 27, 2016. He majored in Biology and Psychology before joining the US Army and serving in the first MASH unit. Dr. Palmer directed Family Medicine Resident Education at Community Hospital for nearly thirty years and served as a volunteer clinical faculty member at SUNY Upstate teaching medical students his entire career. 

Anthony Augustus Canale, 100, of Glens Falls, died Wednesday, March 30, 2016. In July 1941, Tony entered the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in February 1946. In 1950, Tony began teaching languages, driver’s education and tennis in area schools until 1968, when he left Glens Falls High School to practice real estate.

Edward J. Swasey, 68, of Schenectady passed away September 18, 2016. He retired after 35 years as a Director of Information Technology at the Golub Corporation. Upon retiring, he went on to become a teacher at Schenectady County Community College.

Anthony P. Bellai, 51, of Rotterdam died September 17, 2016. Anthony was a Physical Education teacher  for the last 17 years at Saratoga Springs High School where he was also a wrestling coach at the varsity and modified levels, a girls' softball coach, and most recently a cross country coach. 

Frank Michael Gondar Jr., 87, of New Lebanon, passed away September 18, 2016. Frank was a proud Korean War Veteran in the U.S. Army, serving from 1951 until being honorably discharged in 1957. He then went on to serve as in the New York Police Department and the Miami Police Department. In Staten Island, he was a high school history teacher and principal. 

Peggy Sue Albertine (nee Preston), of Albany,  passed on from this world at the age of 66, on September 17, 2016. She drove school bus for a number of years and received an award and honors for her driving skill in avoiding road disasters in inclement weather. 

Sharon Ann (Marshall) Brooks, 67, of Glenville, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2016. Mrs. Brooks taught at the Burnt Hills School District.

Dasie M. Sanderl, 83, of Cold Brook, NY, formerly of Guilderland, passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2016. Dasie was a dedicated teacher in South Glens Falls, Kingston, and Duanesburg.

Elizabeth C. "Betty" Pierce, 82, of Prescott, AZ, passed away on September 10, 2016. She taught in several school districts in New York State, became a real estate agent, office administrator and a small business owner.

Clara "Cecelia" Burdikoff, 73, of Ballston Spa, passed away September 12, 2016. Throughout her professional life, she worked as a teacher in Michigan, New Jersey and New York and as a library specialist at Veeder Elementary School in the South Colonie School District.

Byron Evans, 90, of Saratoga Springs, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016. Byron served as Superintendent at Glide, OR, high school principal in inner city Detroit, Superintendent in Saratoga Springs, Vice President and Vice Provost at RPI, and lastly as BOCES District Superintendent for Saratoga-Washington-Warren counties.

Marie Hoyt, 67, of Albany, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2016. She taught elementary school in inner city Philadelphia, in Bellevue, Mich., St. Stephen's in New Orleans, and three inner city New Orleans public schools.

Lisa DeLuca Knoop, 96, of Cohoes, passed away Friday, September 9, 2016. She was a teacher and guidance counselor in the Cohoes School system.

Dorothy M. Getty, 88, of Glenville, passed away September 10, 2016. Dot started teaching school at Fonda High School and finished her career as Department Chairperson of the Social Studies Department at Linton High School in Schenectady in 1984.

James D. Long, 85, of Colonie, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2016. James proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. After working for GE and in the insurance industry, he took the position as bursar at S.U.N.Y. Oswego. He then transitioned to the Director of Student Loans Service Center at S.U.N.Y. Central Administration in Albany.

Ethel Smith, 98, long time resident of Voorheesville, entered eternal life on Friday, September 9, 2016. After taking time to raise her two girls, she returned to work at Voorheesville High School as a secretary in the main office for over 18 years.


 

Ernest Reis, 71, of Chatham, passed away on September 8, 2016. In the 1960’s he served in the Air Force as a weatherman. At the University of Massachusetts he became involved with reform groups to change the way juvenile delinquents were treated which included several programs that gained national recognition. Ernie subsequently worked for the NYS Division for Youth. After that he worked for over 10 years with Employment and training Programs in Columbia/Greene, and Orange counties. In the 90’s Ernie became a full time substitute teacher followed by working as a GED Prep teacher for RCG BOCES at the Columbia County Jail. He retired from there in 2006 but continued to substitute teach for Chatham, Ichabod Crane, and Taconic Hills schools. Ernie was very active as a member of New York State United Teachers Retiree Council 10, serving as editor of its award winning newsletter, Skyline News, and its companion website. He also served as an Alternate Delegate to the NYSUT Representative Assembly from Retiree Council 10.

Joseph Britt, 94 years old, who retired from the South Colonie Central School District, passed away on August 27, 2016.

Nancy Momrow died April 1, 2016. Nancy was a mathematics teacher at the Lisha Kill Middle School in the South Colonie School District and the Algonquin Middle School in the Averill Park School District, from which she was retired.

 Joseph Basile, 90, of Colonie, was born in Albany in 1926. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945. He served as Radioman Third Class aboard the amphibious ship LSMR-402, USS Big Horn River, preparing for combat in the Pacific Theater.  Joe managed the University at Albany commissary until the early 70's. He then opened a chain of sub shops, Big Dom's Subs, with his older brother Dom.

Loraine P. Kilgallen, 68, of Niskayuna, passed away Sunday, September 4, 2016. Loraine taught elementary school at one time and also worked for over 30 years for New York State in various positions, retiring from DMV as a manager.

Louis E. Emerick, 86, of Colonie, passed away on August 31, 2016. After college, Lou spent two years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. Lou was a teacher, coach and administrator in the Albany School District for many years before retiring in 1995.

Clarence D. (“Rapp”) Rappleyea, 82, a native of Norwich, NY, passed away Sunday, September 4, 2016. Before proceeding to law school, he taught at the South New Berlin Schools in Chenango County.  


Beverly Anne Carter, 57, of Waterford, died Tuesday, September 6, 2016. Most recently she had been employed as a teacher at Albany Academy and at RPI. Prior to that she had taught at Waterford Halfmoon School and at PS 250 in Brooklyn.

Ann Regina Carvill, 90, of Latham, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2016. She was employed for many years at Blue Creek Elementary School in Latham as a cafeteria worker, retiring in the early 90's.

Robert A. Pierson, 87, of Castleton-on-Hudson, passed away August 14, 2016. Robert served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948. He taught in the Albany City School District and later for over 20 years at the Bethlehem Central School system, retiring in 1991.

Elizabeth "Betty" Rue Pickering, 91, formerly of Broadalbin, died Saturday morning, September 3, 2016, in Pensacola, FL.  In 1967, she became the secretary to the Director of Guidance at Broadalbin Central School and retired in 1993.

Lucia Winegard, 81, of Golding Dr., Cobleskill, passed away suddenly on Thursday, September 1st at Cobleskill Regional Hospital. Lucia was born December 1, 1934 in Grange, New Jersey, a daughter of Charles and June (Lawless) Yocum. She graduated from high school in New Jersey and later, graduated from SUNY Cobleskill. George J. Rutnik, 86, of Delmar, passed away peacefully on Saturday August 27, 2016. His work career included teaching and coaching football at the former Ockawamick School in Columbia County (now Taconic Hills Central School District). 



John M. O'Connor, 79, of Edenton, NC, and formerly of Latham, died on Sunday, August 28, 2016. He served the Niskayuna School System starting as a Math teacher and then as an administrator for 31 years.

Chester L. Morelli Sr., 89, longtime resident of Mechanicville, died Sunday, Aug 28, 2016. After retirement, Chet was a City of Mechanicville School Crossing Guard for over 10 years, and the students affectionately called him "Popeye".

Vincent F. Cowling, 97, passed away on August 19, 2016, in Palm Beach Shores, FL. In Fall 1967, Cowling was named leading professor and chairman of the Department of Math at SUNY Albany. He later he was named Dean of the College of Sciences and Math. In Fall 1979, Cowling returned to the SUNY Albany Math Department until his retirement in June 1987. 

Rose Marie (McDermott) Oleyourryk, 82, of Latham, passed away Saturday, August 27, 2016. Rose worked as a school bus driver for the North Colonie School District.

Donald Rylance Smith Jr., 88, lifelong resident of Schenectady, New York, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2016. Don was a proud Navy man, serving in both WWII and Korea. A 6th grade history teacher for over 30 years, Don retired from the East Greenbush Central School District in 1985. 

Maria Petersen, 88, of Rexford, passed away on Monday August 22, 2016. She worked for 22 years at Shenendehowa Schools, retiring in 1997.

Angelina "Nina" S. Rivers, 80, of Albany, died Monday, August 15, 2016. Nina retired from the Albany City School District as coordinator of the L.P.N. program for 18 years and as a School Nurse Teacher.

Ida Santa Catalano (nee Muscolino), 88, of Delmar, entered eternal life on August 19, 2016. In 1961, she began her 29-year career as a Spanish teacher, first at Columbia High School in the East Greenbush School District, then in the Bethlehem Central School District. 

Julianne Shepelavy (nee Nowadly), 73, of Niskayuna, died Wednesday, August 17, 2016. Born on November 7, 1942, in Buffalo, she was a long-time chemistry teacher at Ballston Spa High School.

Suzanne (Simons) Metzger, of Latham, born on May 29, 1929, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2016. Born in New York City and raised in Yonkers, she began teaching in New York City before marrying and moving to Castleton.

Doris I. Wood, 93, of Middleburgh, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2016. Doris retired from Middleburgh Central Schools in 1992, where she taught Jr./Sr. High Math. She had also directed the Schoharie County Head Start Program from 1972-1978. 

Edith Godlewski, 86, formerly of Amsterdam, died Tuesday, August 16, 2016. She was employed as a school teacher for the Ballston Spa School District and later the Greater Amsterdam School District for over 20 years until her retirement.

Ann Kannes of Guilderland, died on Sunday, August 14, 2016. She was born in Buffalo. Ann retired from the Guilderland Central School District in 2008.

 Joan M. (Sullivan) Leith, 77, died Thursday, August 11, 2016. Born in Binghamton, and raised in Hallstead, PA, she taught at the West Junior Middle School in Binghamton.

Guilderland – Harriett Ann Sperry, 82, known to all as “Ann,” passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2016. She was an elementary school reading teacher and Title I Coordinator for the South Colonie School District when she retired in 1991.

 Jerry R. Briggs Sr., 68, of Remsen, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2016. After retiring from the Utica Police Department, he served as school resource officer for the Whitesboro High School. 

Cheryl D. DeCarlo Watson, age 67, of Brunswick died on Wednesday, August 3, 2016. She worked for several years doing private duty nursing, created the C.A.S.E. after school program at St. Jude's Elementary School and was a teacher's aide in the Brittonkill School District.

Albert Eisenhauer, long-time fifth and sixth grade teacher in the Ballston Spa School District died on August 5, 2016. In WW II Mr. Eisenhauer was trained in the Army Specialized Training Program as an engineer and then a military doctor. He worked at an army hospital that was a first stop for acute care patients.

Sheila McCroary Gralow, 68, of Guilderland passed away Friday, August 5, 2016. Sheila worked for Albany Medical Center with stroke patients and later for Guilderland Schools in the Learning Workshop. She was a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association.

Robert James Cipperly, 85, a resident of Eagle Mills since 1965, died Monday, August 8, 2016. Bob spent two years serving honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After his Army service ended, Bob taught agriculture for one year each in the South Glens Falls and Cambridge Schools.

Christine E. (Maloney) Brady of Colonie died Tuesday, August 9, 2016. She spent her career in the Bethlehem Central School District as a special education teacher, retiring in 2004.

Theodore "Ted" Romanowski, 77, of East Greenbush passed away Monday, August 8, 2016. He was a teacher, coach and administrator in the East Greenbush Schools for over 30 years, retiring in 1995.

Irene E. Hull, 83, a longtime resident of North Greenbush, who died on Thursday, August 4, 2016, worked for the Averill Park School District from 1960-1995 in the food service at the West Sand Lake Elementary School. At the time of her retirement, she was the supervisor.

John L. House, 89, of Latham, died August 4, 2016. He held teaching and coaching positions in Hornell and Spencerport, N.Y. school districts. For several summer sessions, he held graduate school teaching positions in school health education at SUNY, Brockport and Plattsburgh, as well as Ithaca College. 

Ken Evans, 55, died Monday, August 1, 2016. Ken was a technology instructor for Bethlehem and Shenendehowa Central School Districts (1999-2001). He also held positions as a teacher with Vanderheyden Hall and an Instructor with Nyack College.

Therese Farrell Connors, 73, of Goshen,  passed away Thursday, August 4, 2016. She was a retired teacher with St. John's Elementary School in Goshen, N.Y. and Taft Elementary School in Washingtonville, N.Y. 

Charlotte Koblenz, 90, of Poway, CA, died on August 3, 2016. She was a French and Spanish teacher for several years and when she retired from teaching, became a hospital admissions worker at Albany Medical Center.

Mary Arndt Slocum, 92, of Loudonville, died on July 19, 2016. A graduate of Winthrop College and former elementary school teacher in Sumter, S.C., she had been a resident of Loudonville since 1973.

In the late afternoon on Saturday, July 30, 2016, Olga Wtodarczak of Rotterdam was called to rest by the Lord. Born in Schenectady in 1938, Olga was a secretary in the Psychology Department at the State University of New York of Albany and the New York State Department of Labor.

Jean R. Winsman, 87, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 31, 2016. Jean was employed for over 39 years as a school teacher at the Fonda-Fultonville Central School District.

Sister Jeanne Pierre Mittnight, CSJ, 98, of Latham, died Thursday, July 28, 2016. In 1976, Sister Jeanne began a 28-year career as teacher and chaplain at the Albany County Jail. 

Joseph Salvatore Bellone, 91, of Cohoes, died Friday, July 29, 2016. He entered the Navy and was a World War II veteran stationed in Okinawa. He taught elementary school fifth and sixth graders specializing in mathematics and history at Ledyard Center School, Ledyard, Conn. After retiring in 1982, he taught Adult Education at the Five Rivers Community College.

 Justine Trattner, 93, of Cohoes,  passed away July 20, 2016. She taught in New York City and later in New Rochelle City Schools where she taught elementary school children for almost 40 years.

Marian Eddy, 98, of West Sand Lake, died Wednesday, July 27, 2016. After teaching at the Sand Lake Elementary School for many years, she retired from the Averill Park Central School District in 1984.

Jane W. Cornell, 85, of Clifton Park and formerly of Newtonville, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2016. Born in Troy on March 5, 1931, she was a teacher at first at Watervliet High School. Later she worked as a teacher for BOCES in the Adult Education Department and then in the Alumni Office at The College of St. Rose.

 John J. Orsini, 73, of Niskayuna, passed away Thursday morning, July 28, 2016. Born in Amsterdam, John was a teacher at Central Park Middle School in the Schenectady City School District from 1967 until his retirement in 2001.

Joan Marie O'Donnell True, 69, of Lady Lake, FL,  died July 24, 2016, while visiting in Florida. Joan was employed in administrative services at Albany and the Guilderland Central School District.

Linda S. (nee Butler) Chalflin, of Philadelphia, PA, died on July 27, 2016. She was a special education teacher, travel advisor, and proud Penn Stater.

Betty Lois Townley, 83, of Athens, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2016. For 35 years she worked for the Coxsackie-Athens Central Schools in food preparation. She retired in 1995.

Ann T. Altieri, 84, of Latham, died Sunday, July 24, 2016. Born in Albany,  Ann retired from the Menands Union Free School District as business office administrator.

Alton "Tony" Downer, 96, of Blue Hill, Maine, died July 24, 2016. With World War II declared he left college in his junior year and joined the Navy achieving the rank of Ensign and was a communications officer on an LST in the Pacific Ocean. From 1948-1958 he worked as a high school band director in Mariemont, Ohio. From 1958-1978 he worked for the North Colonie School District as a music teacher and ultimately an elementary school principal.

Eugene C. Del Vecchio, of Troy, passed away Monday December 30, 2013. Born in Brooklyn NY in 1926, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1944 and served in the Pacific as a Sgt. and ball turret gunner. Taking a position with the Troy School District in 1952, he taught school for 36 years and coached sports for 26, retiring in 1988 as the Athletic Director.

Vlasta "Anne" Matura, 97, passed away Friday, July 15, 2016. Anne was born in Buffalo, NY on March 24, 1919. After graduating from college, she taught school in Elmont, Long Island.

Dorothy L. Lamp, 87, of Scotia, died Wednesday, July 13, 2016. Dorothy was employed as a teacher's aide and library assistant for the Schalmont School District, specifically at Woestina School.

Winnifred "Winnie" Cain, 95, of Vineland, N.J., died July 19, 2016. She was born in Malone, N.Y. on January 25, 1921. She started the first kindergarten class in Berlin, N.Y., and volunteered as a substitute teacher at St. Christopher's Elementary School in North Tonawanda, N.Y.

Andrew V. "Andy" DeMarco, 81, of East Greenbush, died Saturday, July 23, 2016. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1954 to 1957. Andy was a founding faculty member at Fulton-Montgomery Community College in Johnstown. He was a professor at F-MCC until his retirement in 1993, when he received his Professor Emeritus title.

Joseph "Jake" Urkevich, 94, of Mechanicville, died Sunday evening, July 17, 2016. A veteran of World War II, Jake served with the U.S. Army in France and the Rhineland. Jake worked as a janitor for the Mechanicville School District.

Walter C. Brandt Jr., 87, of Burnt Hills, passed away July 18, 2016. Walter worked as a Physical Education teacher in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District, which he retired from in 1987, after many years.

Maynard E. Clark, 84, of Cobleskill, died Tuesday, July 12, 2016. After high school, Maynard joined the United States Navy, serving on the aircraft carriers U.S.S. Saipan and Coral Sea. Upon graduation from college, Maynard immediately went to work for Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica in the Physical Education Department. Maynard moved on to Cobleskill and retired from Fulton-Montgomery Community College in 1993.

Peter L. Huston, Sr., 78, of Glenville, passed away July 12, 2016. He enjoyed his career teaching high school math for over 30 years, most of them at Scotia-Glenville High School.

Robert Merrill Garvin, 86, of Albany, died July 10, 2016. Bob served as associate minister at First Presbyterian Church in Albany after which he taught as a tenured professor in the Philosophy Department of the State University of New York at Albany for 37 years.

Andrew D. Virgilio (Andy), 90, of Punta Gorda, FL, died on July 7, 2016. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Andrew's teaching career began at East Rochester as an elementary school teacher and principal. He later returned to his alma mater, The College at Brockport, where he served from 1961 to 1986 as an administrator.

 Joyce S. Braswell, 84, of East Glenville died on July 14, 2016. Joyce worked for many years in the Schenectady City School System in the Computer Assisted Learning Center, helping students advance their abilities.

Joan Evelyn Schulz, 85, of Slingerlands,  died July 13, 2016. Joan taught for over three decades at the University at Albany/SUNY, where she was instrumental in the creation and development of the Women's Studies Department at UAlbany.

Sandra Marie Moll, 79, of Stillwater, died Thursday morning, July 14, 2016. Sandra worked in the Stillwater Central School District as a teachers aide for the past 16 years.

Frank S. Peak Jr., 86, of Troy died on July 15, 2016. He was past treasurer for the United Steel Workers Union. After retirement he went to work for the Lansingburgh School District as a custodian.

Ellen M. Hahn, 67, of Latham died Sunday, July 17, 2016. Ellen was employed by North Colonie Central School District in the Human Resource Department for over 25 years retiring in 2013. 

G. Stephen Beals Sr., 83, of Albany, passed away, Wednesday, July 13, 2016. Steve was employed by the Albany Public School System as a teacher, assistant principal and principal.

Gladys S. Zickler, 105, passed away Monday, July 11, 2016. Gladys worked as a teacher at Draper School in Rotterdam for over 49 years before her retirement in 1969. 

Judith Anne Whalen, 75, of Waterford, passed away Saturday July 9, 2016. Judy taught Math at Shaker High School and Art at Waterford Halfmoon High School. 

Dale Anne Boudry, 58, of Little Falls, passed away July 1, 2016. Dale worked as a Special Education Teacher at the Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville School District.

Heinz K. W. Harting, 71, of Schenectady, formally of Colonie, died Sunday, March 14, 1993.
An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Harting served with the 749th Tank Battalion and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He retired from the South Colonie School District in 1987 after serving as a custodian for 20 years, notably at Roessleville Elementary School and Lisha Kill Middle School. "Mr. Heinz" was also a lunch monitor at Lisha Kill after his retirement.

Reba M. (Suits) Stark, 97, of Schoharie, NY, died Saturday, July 2, 2016. She taught at the Princetown One-Room Schoolhouse and also substituted at Draper School in Rotterdam. 

William Paul Vogt, 73, of Bloomington, IL, died April 27, 2016. From 1970 until 1998, W. Paul Vogt served in the School of Education, State University of New York at Albany as professor, chair of several departments (at which time he was called "the voice of reason" by colleagues), and associate dean.

Kimberly Rose Rifenberick, 39, of West Sand Lake, passed away on July 8, 2016. Kim attended and later became a long time cheerleading coach in the Averill Park Central School District.

Helen Farrell Mastrianni, 90, of Davidson, NC, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2016. Helen taught high school algebra, plane geometry, business arithmetic, English and Spanish, before her marriage in 1953.

Lawrence Stephen Pivacek, 79, of Rotterdam, passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2016. Lawrence had a 40+ year career as a music educator in the Schenectady City School District.

Edward W. Cassidy, age 77, of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, formerly of Amsterdam, NY, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2016. Ed was employed as a math teacher for many years by the Greater Amsterdam School District.


Robert "Bob" Horan, 52, died Monday, July 4, 2016. Horan had served in education for 25 years, first as a technology teacher at Mohonasen and Shenendehowa school districts before joining Schodack to serve as principal of Maple Hill High School in 2005. The board of education selected him as the district's next superintendent in 2010.


Warren E. Moore, 89, of Hightstown, NJ, died Sunday, June 26, 2016. Warren's career as an educator began as a teacher in Middletown, NY and then serving the Onondaga Central School District as High School Principal from 1953 to 1959 and then as Superintendent of Schools until 1975.

Anna Margaret Becker, 97, of Valatie, died Sunday, July 3, 2016. Her teaching career spanned settings from a one-room school in Rensselaer County, to Spanish Harlem in New York City, to U.S. Government dependents' schools overseas. She retired in 1984 from the New York City Public School system.

Reuben Robert Rusch, 87, of Guilderland, passed away early on Tuesday, June 28, 2016. He worked for many years as a Professor of Statistics at SUNY Albany.

Fort Plain Village Mayor Guy Barton, 69, died Friday, July 1, 2016. He was a school bus driver for more than 40 years and served in the Army Reserves from 1965 to 1978.

Lawrence E. Strack of Middleburgh, born January 24, 1942, passed away on June 26, 2016. Following his service in the United States Army, he was employed by National Lead Co. and later by GE. During his retirement he drove a school bus for the Middleburgh Central School.

Rose Marie Welsh of Ballston Spa, born on September 5, 1946 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, passed away Thursday, June 30, 2016. She was employed as a Secretary at Scotia-Glenville High School and retired in 2009 from Saratoga Springs City School District.

John C. Hodges, 90, of Loudonville, passed away on June 27, 2016. John worked as a School Bus Driver for North Colonie Central School District. He was a Veteran of World War II and served his country in the U.S. Army. 

Diane VanArnum McNulty Gulum, 72, of Cropseyville, died Sunday, June 26, 2016. Diane had been employed as a secretary for many years, working at Heatly School in Green Island.

Jocelyn Rogers Jerry, 89, of Albany and Speculator, N.Y., passed away June 27, 2016. In 1963 Lyn began her 32 years as Mrs. Jerry, English teacher at Bethlehem Central High School.

Eleanor (Fass) Schroeder, 95, of Rensselaer, passed away June 22, 2016.  After Eleanor retired she worked as a teacher's aide at the Van Rensselaer Elementary School in the Rensselaer City School District.

Marie Louise Hagadorn Murdock, 94, of Saratoga Springs, died June 20, 2016. Born in Albany, she was a 3rd grade teacher in Albany and worked many years for Hamagreal Elementary School in the Bethlehem School District.

Shirley Jean Childs, 91, passed away June 15, 2016. Shirley worked as a social worker in Schenectady and Montgomery Counties. She later taught at Tribes Hill School and spent most of her career as a teacher for the Greater Amsterdam School District.

Stephen S. Israel, 89, of Niskayuna, passed away June 21, 2016. Mr. Israel retired after 30 years of service to Niskayuna Central Schools, as a teacher and administrator.

Iliana Alexandra Semmler, 83,  of Delmar, died on June 17, 2016. She taught at the University at Albany in the English Department until her retirement, with specialties in American Literature and Literature and Medicine.

Maryanne D. Radley, 75, of Selkirk,  passed away June 12, 2016. She retired from the Ravena Coeymans Selkirk School District. 

Charlotte Bullis Pickett, of West Palm Beach, FL, and longtime resident of Mechanicville, died Wednesday, June 8, 2016. Charlotte was a substitute teacher in the Mechanicville, Hoosic Valley, Stillwater and Ballston Spa school districts.

Ruth Helen (Larson) Goold, 85, of Valatie,  passed away June 20, 2016. Ruth was a teacher's aide for Chatham Central School District.

June Ann Bond, of Arlington, VA, born June 5, 1931, passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2016. June worked at Shenendehowa High School as a teacher's aide and mentor.

Andres Aguilar Sanabria, 23, and Santiago Jimenez Aylin, 28, who have been identified as trainee teacher students, and at least 10 others, were killed by police in Oaxaca, Mexico during demonstrations by a teachers' union against teacher evaluation laws imposed by the Mexican government.

Helen Agnes (Supranowicz) Contois, 91, of Rockville, MD, passed away on June 19, 2016. She was employed by the American Locomotive Co (ALCO), the Carl Co. Department Store and the Schenectady Public School system as a substitute teacher.

Patricia Corning Stanley, of Saratoga Springs, died June 14, 2014. Pat was born in Ballston Spa. She had a 40 year career as a foreign language teacher.

Catherine Mary (Dempsey) Cummings, 93, of Franklin, MA, died  June 10, 2016. Catherine graduated from SUNY Albany with a Master of Library Science Degree, later teaching in a Latham, NY Middle School.

Helen L. (DuPont) Tragni Ford, 80,  of Saratoga Springs, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2016. She worked as a secretary for the Saratoga Springs City School District, prior to her retirement.

Marie Scofield Hearn, 94, of Loudonville, died Monday, June 6, 2016. She taught high school English and history in Lake Luzerne, before marrying and starting a family.

William F. Boll, 70, of Waterford, passed away Monday evening, June 6, 2016. He served in the Air Force from 1966-1970. He had a career with the Anaheim (CA) Union High School District for many years. He retired in 2008.

A well-known music teacher in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District and a popular area musician and composer, Thomas "Tom" Brown, 83, of Clifton Park, died on May 25, 2016. He taught music at Watervliet High School, and also served on the faculty at Schenectady County Community College, Skidmore College and The College of Saint Rose.

Richard W. O. Beebe, 58, of Guilderland, passed away on June 5, 2016.  He worked as a nurse at St. Peter's Hospital for 10 years before becoming a paramedic educator at HVCC, Bassett Hospital, and SUNY Cobleskill where he served as both director and educator for the program.

Carol Ann Gula, 77, of Guilderland, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2016. Born in Herkimer, Carol worked as a teacher for one year at Guilderland CSD.

Deborah A. Igras, 53, of Niverville, passed away June 6, 2016. She worked for over 10 years as a school bus driver for Ichabod Crane Central School, Valatie, NY.

Clara Worden McCann, 89, of Albany, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2016. She began her teaching career in 1948 in Bradford, NY and concluded with her retirement from Albany High in 1984.

George A. Bedell, 66, of Big Indian, NY, died September 10, 2005. He had been a teacher at Averill Park High School for 35 years. 

Barbara Lisle Picken, 81, formerly of Troy, passed away May 4, 2016. Mrs. Picken was a lifelong educator, teaching in school districts from New York to Texas, and was a pioneer in teaching English as a second language. 

Richard Francis Lyman, 83, of Saratoga Springs, passed away on Wednesday June 1, 2016. He was a classroom teacher in Frankfort, NY,  and a Principal in Frankfort, Coxsackie-Athens, and Saratoga Springs City Schools for a combined total of 33 years.

Hazel D. Gander, 94, of Loudonville, entered into eternal life Sunday, June 5, 2016. Hazel served her Country honorably in the US Navy during both World War II and the Korean War. She retired after teaching for many years in the Albany City School District.

On June 1, 2016, William Scott Klug, of El Segundo, CA, was shot to death at UCLA. He was a 39 year old Mechanical Engineering professor there.

Christopher Kendris, 93, of Albany, died Monday, May 30, 2016. He taught French at a number of schools, including the State University of New York at Albany and was chair of the Department of Foreign Languages at Farmingdale High School, in the early 1960's.

Nicholas Picciano, 94, passed away May 17, 2016. Nick played trumpet in various Broadway and concert venues with greats such as Tony Bennett and Judy Garland. He taught orchestral music from 1961 to 1967 in Astoria, Queens and then as a music teacher at Watervliet High School, until his retirement.

Rosemarie Donnelly, 73, of Sun City Center, Florida, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2016. She taught in the Amsterdam School District and Brunswick Central Schools.

Wayne Francis Barber, 72, of Charlton, passed away Monday, May 30, 2016. He served as the director of guidance for Cohoes City School District for 30 years before his retirement.

Elizabeth S. Valachovic, 85, of Rotterdam, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2016. She worked as a teacher's aide at Draper School in Rotterdam.

Keith C. McDermott, of Cohoes, passed into eternal rest on Sunday, May 22, 2016. He was employed by Northeastern Regional Information Center (BOCES) in the Troy School District as an Information Technology Specialist.

Michael F. Daly, 69, of Albany, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2016. He practiced law for many years and was a lecturer at SUNY Albany.

Josephine Goldson-Jackson, 63, of Colonie, passed on May 14, 2016. She worked at the Schenectady School system in their food service department.

Sylvia M. Navaretta, 86, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2016. Sylvia worked for many years as a teacher's aide at Mohonasen Schools.

Carol "Jean" Hamilton, 81, of East Greenbush, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2016. Jean was a teachers aide and union president for East Greenbush Central Schools.

Frances Deitz Beerle, of Slingerlands, passed away on May 22, 2016. She was born in Albany, on February 19, 1924. Her most recent employment was at Columbia/ Rensselaer/Greene BOCES as payroll clerk 1971-79, and prior to that she was a bus driver for special education children.

Charles Blair Hartman, 73, of Cobleskill, died Thursday, May 19, 2016. He began his teaching career at Richfield Springs and then Cobleskill Central School, where he taught both mathematics and computer science at the high school level, retiring in 1998. For the past several years, Blair taught algebra at SUNY Cobleskill.

Stuart Stiles, 80, of Howells, NY, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2015. Reverend Stiles had been a pastor for the United Church of Christ for 53 years. He taught psychology at Orange County Community College for 33+ years and was Professor Emeritus.

Chester H. Robinson, 97, of St Petersburg, FL, passed away February 11, 2016. Chester served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1946 as a Command Blimp Pilot. He worked many years as Dean of the School of General Studies at Herbert Lehman College - City University of New York.

Dorothy "Dorsi" Tately, 88, of Harwich, MA, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2016. In 1965 her family moved to Scotia, NY. There, Dorsi worked for years in school libraries in Scotia and Schenectady.

Sharon Lee Holmes, 68, of Mechanicville, died Tuesday, May 17, 2016. Born in Troy, she taught for 30 years at Schuylerville Central Elementary School, retiring in 2000. 

Robert Myles Standish, 74, of Rexford, died Sunday May 15, 2016. He was born on Sept. 19, 1941 in Newark, NJ. Bob retired from SUNY Albany after 30 years of employment with New York State.

Gary C. Weaver, 64, of Clifton Park, passed away Monday, May 16, 2016. He worked for Ballston Spa Central Schools for 10 years, and later for Advance Auto in Saratoga Springs.

Marian R. Bosy, 84, of Scotia, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016. Marian was employed as a dispatcher for the Glenville Police Department. She also was employed for many years as a school crossing guard in Scotia.

Helen A. Methe, 81, of Altamont, passed away March 12, 2016. She taught at the Berne-Knox-Westerlo High School, teaching business and typing classes to 100's of students during her tenure.

Yvonne Kane White, 87, of Scotia, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016. Yvonne was born March 14, 1929 in the Village of Schoharie. and was a school teacher at Delanson Union Free School. 

Georgine Schielke, 102, of Clifton Park, passed away May 12, 2016. Georgine worked as a social worker in New York City and taught 6th grade for 25 years in Elmont, NY.

 John W. Tooley Sr., 64, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2016.  John worked for the DMV in Albany for 23 years and was the owner/operator of Tooley's Body Shop in Princetown. He was currently a school bus driver for Schalmont Schools.

Virginia Helen Cegelski Guyette, 92, of Rotterdam, NY, passed away Sunday evening, May 8, 2016. A former employee of the General Electric Company, she was also the secretary at Schonowe School in Schenectady in the 1950's.

Anthony R. Pacelli, 90, of Glenville, passed away on May 6, 2016. He began his career as a teacher in the Schenectady Public School District. He was on the faculty of the School of Education, SUNY at Albany and later at SUNY Plattsburg. He was also the off-campus supervisor of student teachers in the Capital District area.

Martha J. Bartoszek, 84, of Plattsburgh passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2016. She worked as a nurses' aide for many years in Plattsburgh City School District.

Paul A. Muller, 87, of Colonie, passed on Monday, May 2, 2016.  He played ball for the Chicago White Sox as a pitcher, until he was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Paul spent his career as director of Athletics and Physical Education with the Berlin Central School District.

Nataline J. Marion, 95, of Cohoes, died Tuesday May 3, 2016. In the mid 1960's she began working for the North Colonie School District as a baker at Shaker High School until her retirement in 1981. 

Laurence (Larry) Alan Dayton, age 70, passed away on May 4, 2016. He taught Technology, Engineering and Industrial Arts in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District for 30 years.

Bernie J. Kolacki, Jr., 87, died Monday, May 2, 2016. Mr. Kolacki was employed as a music educator for the Broadalbin-Perth School District, retiring in 1989.

Catherine "Katie" Reynolds, 89, of Schenectady passed away Thursday, April 28, 2016. Katie was employed as an administrative assistant at Roosevelt Elementary School in Schenectady for many years, until retirement. 

John P. Hotaling, 71, of Duanesburg, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016. Mr Hotaling taught science for two years at Hackett Junior High School and then American History and Economics at Guilderland High School.

Anne Bernice "Bernie" Bytner of Colonie died April 29, 2016, at the age of 87. She was an operating room nurse at St. Peter's Hospital and later the District Nurse in the South Colonie School District.


Seraphino C. "Sy" De Lucia of, 86, Coxsackie died on April 29, 2016. He began his teaching career in Mayfield, N.Y. in 1953. In 1955 he moved to Coxsackie and began a career at Coxsackie-Athens Central School District which lasted for 37 years, as a teacher and administrator.


Penny Ann Grastorf, age 74, died on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, in Clifton Park. Penny taught math at Shenendehowa Central School District for her 31 year teaching career.

Helen Michaelson, 95, of Mystic, Conn., passed away April 28, 2016. After college graduation, she worked for the Signal Corps in Monmouth, N.J. during World War II. She taught chemistry at Shenendehowa High School until her retirement in 1995.

On the evening of April, 25, 2016, Charles F. Guerin, 80, of Colonie passed away. Expert on saxophone and clarinet, Charles taught band and orchestra at Sewanhaka High School in Nassau County on Long Island, eventually assuming the position of District Coordinator of Music.

Judith A. Gerke, 71, of Nassau and formerly from Troy, died on April 26, 2016. Mrs. Gerke was retired from the Troy School District where she worked as a secretary.

Joanne L. Fitts, 62, of North Kingstown, RI, passed away Sunday April 17, 2016. Joanne was a longtime Physical Education teacher and coach in the North Kingstown School System.

Carl W. Baum, 80, of Rotterdam, died Friday, April 22, 2016. The last 22 years of his employment was with the Niskayuna Schools as Head of Electrical Maintenance. Carl was a three year Veteran of the U.S. Marines. 

Muriel Shaprio, of Albany,  passed away on April 26, 2016. She taught at elementary schools in Long Island, Pennsylvania and New York. While residing in Niskayuna, Muriel was the preferred substitute at the Latham Ridge School of the North Colonie School System for over 30 years.


Alexander John Gadomski Jr., 71, of Frederick, MD, formerly of Albany, passed away on April 22, 2016. He was a microbiologist in Washington D.C. and later in life, he worked for Frederick County (MD) Public schools.


Doris Miriam Daley, 99, a long-time resident of Athens died Tuesday, April 19, 2016. In the fall, of 1937, she was hired to teach Latin and French at what was then Athens High School. She later taught sixth grade and then third grade in the Coxsackie -  Athens School District until her retirement in 1985.

A. G. Davis Philip, 87, of Schenectady, died March 28, 2016. He was a world-renowned astronomer. He taught at the University of New Mexico and SUNY at Albany and was a research professor of Astronomy at Union College. 

Mary Joann Endries Wood, 77, of Cohoes, passed away on April 21, 2016. Mary Jo retired from the Mohawk Central School District (now the Central Valley School District) where she worked as a teacher for many years.

William M. Hay died April 15, 2016. William worked for the Saratogian Newspaper as a salesman and later was a school bus driver for Saratoga Springs City School District for 20 years.

Carmine "Carl" Denofio, 92, passed away on April 15, 2016. He began his teaching career at Berne Knox High School and then taught at Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady. He completed his career in 1979, retiring as the Business Department Chairperson at Linton High School.

Evelyn “Bobo” Winfield Baltz, 97, of Schenectady, N.Y., formerly of Kingston, N.Y., passed away on April 13, 2016. She taught school in Peekskill, N.Y., Ephrata, Wash., and Kingston, N.Y.

Alan S. Whiting, 84, of Richmond VA, a long time Rochester resident, died April 11, 2016. Alan grew up in Delmar, moved to Rochester and served for many years as principal with the West Irondequoit Central School District.


Richard A. Grounds Sr., 76, of Loudonville, died Friday, April 15, 2016. Richard spent his working career as an industrial arts teacher, retiring from the Margaretville Central School District.



Joyce Hoffman Hambright, 69, of East Greenbush died Thursday, April 14, 2016. She retired from teaching instrumental music, 30 years in the East Greenbush Central Schools.

Monica (Barlow) Gallagher, 59, of Albany, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2016. Monica worked as a teachers aide at School 19 in Albany for many years. 

Deborah A. Simonsmeier, 65, of Kinderhook died Sunday, April 10, 2016. She was retired from the Ichabod Crane Central School. She also worked as a nurse in several New York State locations.

John "Jack" K. Scheely Jr., of Long Neck, DE, passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2016. Jack was Superintendent of Buildings for school districts in upstate New York, including Shenendehowa and Berlin Central School Districts and North Country Community College. 

Rebecca J. Shepherd, 54, of Schenectady, passed away April 8, 2016. Rebecca taught music for over 30 years and was due to retire in May, 2016 from the Lansingburgh Central School District.

Joan D. Kaminski, 84, of Colonie, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016. She served as lunch monitor at Shaker Road Elementary School in the South Colonie School District for 42 years.

Mary Louise Day, 85, of Lakeland, FL, formerly of Keene, NH, died March 29, 2016. She was a high school math teacher, teaching at various high schools in New York State, retiring from teaching at the Troy High School.

Yolanda S. "Yo" Greene, 78, of Amsterdam, passed away Friday, April 8, 2016.Yolanda was a linguist and in addition to English, was fluent in French, Italian and Latin. Along with several classmates, she accepted a teaching position on Long Island.

Carolyn Claire Kaups, 78, died Sunday, April 3, 2016. She taught school in South Carolina and Bayonne, NJ, primarily in the lower grades. She moved to the Capital District in 1983, where she worked as a substitute teacher in Schenectady City Schools.

Susan P. Coffey, of Albany, died Tuesday April 5, 2016. She taught chemistry at Albany High School and at Albany College of Pharmacy.

Harold J. Reger, 89, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016. Harold served with the US Navy on the U.S.S. Alamance during WWII. He was later employed by Niskayuna and then Draper School Districts from where he retired in 1986.

Michael J. Catrambone, 60, of Scotia, passed away Monday, April 4, 2016. He enjoyed a brief teaching assignment at Draper High School, but spent most of his career employed as a gas technician with National Grid.

MaryJane Samuels, age 82, of Saratoga Springs, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2016. MaryJane spent her career as the cafeteria supervisor at Chango Elementary School in the Shenendehowa School District for many years.

Dwight G. Harpp, 82, of Cobleskill, NY, died Friday, April 1, 2016. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps, serving from 1951 to 1954. He later began his career as a carpenter working for himself and finally for SUNY Cobleskill until his retirement in 1995.

Aniela Sykala, 100 years old, passed away April 1, 2016. Born in Poland on July 30, 1915, she came to the U.S. in 1949. Aniela retired from the Schenectady School District.

Frederick David Brumbaugh, 77, of Davidson, NC, passed away on February 12, 2016. He taught music in the Schenectady City School District in addition to teaching private organ and piano lessons.

Ruth M. Hurr, 88, of Castleton, passed away on February 14, 2016. She taught in Liberty, N.Y. and then began teaching English and social studies in the East Greenbush Public School system in 1953.

Frances Jean Marriott, 94, of Delmar, died March 30, 2016. After raising her children, she worked for the Delmar Reformed Church and the Bethlehem School District.

Alfred D. Russo, 73, of Albany, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016. He worked 24 years on the Albany Police Department, retired in 1993, and was a hall monitor in Hackett Middle School.

Francis H. Purcell, 85, of Cobleskill, born May 7, 1930 in Seward, NY, died Saturday, March 26, 2016. He worked at SUNY Cobleskill as a cook until retiring after 17 years of service. 

Michael S. D’Agostino, 65, of Ballston Lake, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2016. Michael was a Professor at Hudson Valley Community College, where he taught Italian.

Vincent de Paul Kugler, age 84, of Clifton Park, passed away March 28, 2016. Vince spent the majority of his career dedicated to the SUNY Higher Education System, starting as a manager of administrative systems at UAlbany, where he also taught.

John J. "Jack" Fahey, Jr., 84, of Delmar, died Monday, March 28, 2016. Jack began his career as a school teacher at Philip Livingston Jr. High School in Albany where he taught Math and Science for 10 years and was responsible for starting the Science Fairs for the Albany City School District.

James Doak, 84, of Wynantskill, died Monday, March 28, 2016. James was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and was a Teacher for Averill Park High School retiring in 1994 after 32 years of service.

Albert J. Zeppieri, Jr., 75, of Amsterdam, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016. Albert began his teaching career in the Amsterdam Public School system, later joining the faculty of SUNY at Cobleskill in the Humanities Department for 29 years before retiring.

Winifred Frances Simmons Augusta (Winnie), 100, of Port Orange, Florida, formerly of Scotia, passed away on March 12, 2016. Upon graduation from college she began a long teaching career that started in a four-room school in Ithaca, New York. 

Donald R. Covell, 75 of Perry, passed away March 19, 2016. Don began his teaching and coaching career at Churchville-Chili High School and ended it as superintendent of the Keshequa Central School District, from which he retired in 2014.

Jerry R. Shepardson of Chatham and Piseco N.Y., passed away on March 25, 2016. He worked for Morris Hills Regional High School in New Jersey from 1958-1960 and finished his career, working as a guidance counselor in the Chatham Central School district until his retirement in 1991.

Bernice E. Eskridge Valigorsky, 96, of Cohoes, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2016. She worked as a crossing guard for the former Cohoes School 4 on Garner Street.

Clifton Joseph Hebert III (“CJ”), 51, Cooperstown Central School District superintendent, died Sunday, March 20, 2016, near his home in Cobleskill from injuries received in an ATV accident.

Susan Deans Sweeney of Mattituck passed February 24, 2016, at age 56. She was an elementary school teacher at William Floyd School District, located on the South Shore of Long Island, for 28 years.

Thomas R. Corcoran Sr, 74, of Voorheesville, died Saturday, March 19, 2016. Always a proud Vermonter, born in Rutland, his professional life started as a teacher of music and English working in secondary education. 

Marilyn S. Howe, age 80, Schenectady, NY, passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2016. She was a dedicated elementary school teacher for Horseheads Central School District for over 30 years.

Agostina "Auggie" Frances (Schillaci) Maroli, 90, of Troy died Friday, March 18, 2016. Auggie was a teacher at Stamford Central School in Stamford, N.Y. from 1947-51 and a business management and typing teacher at Troy High School from 1951-68.

David Wallace Champagne, 80, passed away in Rexford on March 17, 2016. He taught high school in New York State and Aiyetoro Nigeria, college and post-graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh and the University at Albany.

Carolyn Shepherd Welch passed away on March 17, 2016. Born on December 14, 1944 in Schenectady, NY, Carol spent her professional career as a special education teacher in the Schenectady School District, retiring from Zoller School.

Elizabeth "Liz" A. (Fahey) Marcolini, of Latham, died Sunday, March 13, 2016, at the age of 68. A graduate of the University at Albany, Liz worked for the University's Office of Residential Life and later at Rockefeller College. 

Grace Valerie Floyd, 94, of Schenectady, died Sunday, March 13, 2016. Grace worked for the Schenectady Public school system for a number of years. She went on to working at the Schenectady Children's Shelter where she cared for neglected children.

 Joan B. Lewis, (Betty Joan Crown), of Ballston Lake,  born May 18, 1929, in Washington DC, and a resident of the area for nearly 50 years, passed from this life Thursday morning, March 17, 2016. Joan was a first grade school teacher at Charlton Heights Elementary School for thirty years.

Mrs. Elaine D. Lapi, 88, of Palatine Bridge, New York, died Wednesday, March 16, 2016. Mrs. Lapi was an educator for Fort Plain Central School from 1951-1982.

Florence Tebo Deyo, 99, of Glenville, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2016. Florence was a benefit coordinator for the Scotia-Glenville Public School System for many years, until her retirement.

Rebecca Boucher, 83, passed away on March 15, 2016. Becky was a school nurse-teacher at the Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Junior High School, where she served for some 30 years, until her retirement in 1987. 

Annie T. Jarosz, 80, of East Greenbush, passed away on Saturday morning, March 12, 2016. Through her employment, she worked with the hundreds of children that crossed her path during over 25 years with the Shenendehowa Central School District.

Gail M. Dwyer, 78, of Delmar, passed away March 15, 2016. Gail graduated from Potsdam College and 
went on to work for nearly ten years as a Teacher for the Albany School District.

William Wilson Alwell, 79, of Saratoga Springs, died Sunday, March 13, 2016. Bill taught school and then worked for years with the New York State Department of Education. 

Shirley Miriam Zendle passed away on March 14, 2016. Shirley was born in 1927 in Newark, NJ. She taught in the Schenectady City School District regularly for 43 years.

Linda S. Stanczik, 65, of Albany, died Thursday, March 10, 2016. Linda worked for New York State United Teachers for 27 years, retiring in 2013 as a regional staff director of the Capital District Regional Office. Prior to her employment at NYSUT, Linda taught in the Mohonasen School District.

Meredith C. Fellows, 87, of Halfmoon, died Friday, March 11, 2016. Meredith worked for the Shenendehowa School system for a couple of years, moving on to Building Superintendent for National Savings Bank in Albany for several years, retiring in 1993.

Mary Jane (Toot) Parker, 101, a long-time resident of Albany and East Greenbush, died March 3, 2016. Before retirement in 1979, she was a library clerk for the East Greenbush Central Schools.

Charles "Chuck" A. Weed, 80, of Troy, died Sunday March 6, 2016. Chuck's career in public education began at Rockland High School where he taught from 1961-1962 through serving as the Coordinator of Curriculum and Instruction for the Capital Region BOCES from 1975-1995.

William A. Dumbleton, 88, of Chicago, died on March 7, 2016.  He was professor of English at the University at Albany for more than forty years (1953-1994), during which he taught English and Irish Literature to an estimated ten thousand students.

Jennie C. Pennington, 73, of Schenectady, passed away March 6, 2016. Mrs. Pennington, who thought herself mainly a "teacher" with nearly 50 years of teaching and administrative experience in public schools, was especially proud of the accomplishments of students, as well as the teachers she hired while working at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

Barton M. Van Wie, 88, died Friday morning, March 4, 2016. He began his teaching career at Knox Junior High School in Johnstown, teaching Math and Science there for 7 years, until accepting a similar position at Oneida Junior High in Schenectady, retiring in 1982, completing 30 years as an educator.

Joan Manweiler Robinson died in Dover, N.H. on February 12, 2016, at the age of 91. Joan received her Master's Degree from State University of New York at Albany and taught elementary school students in Westmere, N.Y. for many years.

Richard McCallum Clark, professor emeritus at the University at Albany in educational psychology and statistics, died Friday, February 26, 2016, at the age of 88. 

Raymond Paul Stack, born Nov. 13th, 1937, Fitchburg, MA, passed away Sunday, Feb. 28th, 2016 in Glenville, NY. Ray began his career at Woodlawn School in Schenectady, then proceeded to teach Social Studies at Linton and Schenectady High Schools.

Anna P. Dross, age 81, of Waterford, passed away March 4, 2016. She was employed by the Waterford-Halfmoon School District as a cafeteria manager, retiring in 1991.

Kathleen M. Peterson, 56, of Guilderland, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2016. Kathleen worked for Guilderland Central Schools for many years.

Eileen Woodstock Padvaiskas, 83, of Wyantskill, died Wednesday, March 2, 2016. Born in The Bronx, Mrs. Padvaiskas was a social studies teacher at Troy High School for over 30 years.

 Jacqueline S. Drozdzal (nee Trudo), of Rensselaer, was born on August 26, 1954 in Nyack, N.Y. and died during the last few days of February or the first few days of March, 2016. She took a job as an elementary school cafeteria cashier so she could see her son during the day and ended up being a favorite of all of the kids.

Ellen M. Cosgrove, 76, of Clifton Park, died Wednesday March 2, 2016. Ellen worked as a teacher in the North Colonie School District for more than 29 years.

Elizabeth "Liz" Falkowitz, age 63, of Glenville, NY, died Tuesday, March 1, 2016. She worked as Senior Account Clerk for the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District for many years until retiring in June of 2015.

Pauline Foisy Porter, of Albany, died Sunday, February 28, 2016. She retired after a long career at the Voorheesville Elementary School. 

Victoria Kam Hau Lobo (nee Leong) of Albany, passed away on February 9, 2016, at the age of 73.  She worked briefly as a school teacher in Uganda and New York.

Marion E. Quinn, 94, of Troy, died Sunday, February 28, 2016. In her early years she was a business teacher and girls basketball coach at the Fonda High School.

Patricia A. Flint, 80, of Charlton, passed away Monday, February 29, 2016. Patricia worked as a substitute teacher at the Burnt Hills Ballston Lake School District and taught 7th and 8th grade English at St. Mary's Catholic School.

Shirley Ann Machione Cross, 66, of Troy, passed from this life on February 28, 2016. She taught at the Troy Public School District for 18 years, where she worked in various elementary schools.

Shirley May (Tooker) Riffley, 96, of Castleton, died February 29, 2016. Her first job was teaching English and Latin in Forestport, N.Y. Shirley completed her career as librarian at Goff Middle School in East Greenbush in 1980.

Helen Edna Winkler Fries, 95, of Altamont, passed from this world on February 27, 2016. To help with the war (World War II) effort, Helen worked at General Electric. After her youngest child started school, she started working for the Guilderland Central School District in the cafeteria.

Ruth Elizabeth Pierce (Hughes) Moyer, 96, of Scotia, died Monday, February 22, 2016. She served in the United States Navy in Gainesville, Ga., from 1944-46. She taught high school home economics in upstate New York State until 1965. She concluded  her career by retiring from Iowa State University in 1986 as the Head of Home Economics Education.

Vivien N. Woodworth, 90, of Delmar, passed away on Friday, February 19, 2016. She taught high school English in the Hudson Valley and Syracuse and spent 30 years as a school psychologist for schools in the Mohawk Valley.

Bruce J. "Blue Hawk" Smith, 82, died February 23, 2016. He was very proud of his Mahican heritage. Bruce was first, a career Air Force pilot of 20 years, stationed in Alaska, Georgia, Texas, California and South Carolina. His second career was teaching social studies at Ichabod Crane High School for about 18 years.

Phyllis (nee: Cortesi) Sorrentino, 92, of Rotterdam, died Wednesday, February 24, 2016.  Phyllis worked for the Mohonasen Central School District. She retired from Mohonasen at the age of 80.

Robert "Bob" Anderson, 63, of Rotterdam,  died on Monday, February 22, 2016. He worked as a security monitor for the Mohonasen High School.

Donald Countermine, 77, of Clifton Park died Saturday, January 30, 2016. As a young man, he taught high school math in the Albany and Troy public school systems for 10 years.

Peter J. Cayan Jr., 85, of Clifton Park passed away on Sunday February 21, 2016. He served as the Dean of Business Management at SUNY Delhi until 1976, and was instrumental in building the campuses of North Country Community College and SUNY Utica Polytechnic.

Janet Nutt Lundgren, 85, of Madison, Alabama, formerly of Schenectady, died on February 19, 2016. Jan taught Home Economics at Maywood High School (NJ) and retired as guidance secretary from Paramus High School (NJ). 

Helen M. Smrstik, 74, of Glenville, died February 19, 2016. Helen was a teaching assistant at the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School from 1984, until her retirement in 2015.

Rodney E. Penny, 92, formerly of Northport, Long Island, passed away on February 20, 2016. Rod concluded his career in education as an administrator in the Half Hollow Hills District for over 25 years, retiring in 1984.

Barbara Jean Tourtellot Foti, 78,  died February 19, 2016. Barbara taught for 28 years in the Mohonasen Central School District at Bradt and Carmen Schools.

Grace L. Altieri, 88, of Saratoga Springs, passed February 17, 2016. She worked for the Saratoga Springs School System for over 30 years, retiring in 1999.

Paul J. Engineri Sr., 93, of Interlaken, NY, died February 19, 2016. After college, Paul first taught music at Sharon Springs High School. He later taught piano in Troy, for 42 years.

Billie Aul, 62, of Albany, died February 1, 2016. She served as a librarian at SUNY Geneseo for a few years.

Marcello "Marc" A. Ruggeri, 88, of Troy died Tuesday, February 16, 2016. Marc taught in the automotive department at Hudson Valley Community College and was instrumental in developing the first automotive transmission curriculum .

Frances Bethea Grant, 83, of Raleigh, NC, departed this life on February 10, 2016. She taught social studies and science at several schools in South Carolina, Pennsylvania and New York.

Olive Elizabeth Berner, 93, of Schenectady, passed away Friday, February 12, 2016. She spent most of her career teaching generations of second graders for the Mohonasen School District, retiring in 1986.

Mildred "Mickey" Stratton Brooks, 88,  of Delmar, passed away Friday, February 12, 2016. After college graduation she taught music for two years at Red Jacket High School in Shortsville, NY.

Richard Ehle Keel, of South Bethlehem,  entered eternal rest on February 15, 2016. Born in Albany in 1940, he served four years in the United States Marines. He taught social studies in the middle school at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, retiring in 1995.

Margaret Funston, 84, of Ballston Spa, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2016. Margaret was a teaching assistant at Ballston Spa Middle School.

Victoria "Tori" Stenard, 37, of Schenectady, passed away Saturday, February 13, 2016. Tori worked at Yates Elementary School in Schenectady for the last 10 years as a paraprofessional.

George J. Genevive, Jr., 86, of Troy, passed away , on Monday, February 15, 2016. He spent 50 years working at Hudson Valley Community College where he served as director of food service for many of those years.

Toni Jean Lyng, age 45, of Port Edward, passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2016. Toni was a teacher at the Brown School in Schenectady and an English teacher at the Shaker Middle School in the North Colonie School District for many years.

The Mohonasen School District community is mourning the loss of Deborah O'Donnell Roman, 44, an English as a New Language Learners teacher at Bradt School. Mrs. Roman, her husband and son passed away in a fire at their Colonie home on Tuesday evening, February 9, 2016.

Katherine Cogley, 87, formerly of Schenectady, died Saturday, February 13, 2016. Mrs. Cogley was an English teacher for 26 years, retiring in 1977. She taught at Washington Irving, Nott Terrace High School and Linton High School, all in Schenectady. She also taught at Martin Van Buren School in Kinderhook.


Mildred Iona (Wright) Hathaway passed away in Rochester, NY, February 10, 2016, at the age of 103. Mildred was educated at Fredonia Normal School, College of Saint Rose, Russell Sage College, and SUNY Albany. She retired from teaching in 1968.

Frances J. Navojosky, 87, of Watervliet, passed away Friday, February 12, 2016. She worked at the Watervliet Public school as a cafeteria worker. 

Yesenia Valle, age 44, of Ballston Lake passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2016. She was a fourth grade teacher in the Newark, NJ, public school system for five years, before relocating to Ballston Lake. She was currently employed as a specialist with the Regional Bilingual Education Network (RBERN) for Questar III (Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene Counties) BOCES.

Irene Dorothy Wilcox Dormandy, 89, of Scotia, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2016. After a post graduation summer exploring Europe, Irene became a cherished teacher at several NY schools until she left Worcester Central School to raise her family in 1959.

Mildred F. Adriance, 91, of Troy, passed away February 10, 2016. Mildred was employed at Ichabod Crane Central School District as a bus driver and was an auditor for New York State Teachers Retirement System.

Barbara Jane Dallas, 88, of Ravena, died Tuesday, February 9, 2016. Barbara retired from the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk School District where she worked for the Transportation Department and the Food Service Department.

John Leslie "Les" Campbell, 92, of Saratoga Springs, passed away Monday, February 8, 2016. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a science teacher at Thomas Jefferson JHS and Fair Lawn HS, both in Fair Lawn, NJ. He served as an administrator at FLHS until his retirement in 1985, serving 40 years in the Fair Lawn public schools.

 Jennie Domanico Tracey, 95, of Clarksville,  passed February 9, 2016. During the late 60s and throughout the 70s, she worked as a lunch room and playground monitor at Clarksville Elementary School.

Joyce R. Bee, 81, of Delmar, passed away February 4, 2016. She worked for Michigan State University for four years and retired after 26 years of working in food service for the Bethlehem Central School District. 

Michael F. Perna, 47, of Latham, passed away on February 9, 2016. He taught Criminal Justice at Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery Board of Cooperative Educational Services, Fulton-Montgomery Community College, Empire State College, Broome County Community College and Nassau County Community College.

Catherine Golden Chauvin, 65, of Saratoga Springs, died Monday, February 8, 2016. She began her teaching career at Dorothy Nolan Elementary School within the Saratoga Springs City School District in the early 70's. She was a fourth grade teacher for 10 years and then spent 25 years as a second grade teacher, until retiring in 2007.

Carol I. Partak, 71, of East Greenbush died Tuesday, February 9, 2016. Carol was a drug and alcohol counselor at the Whitney M. Young Jr. Health Center; a teacher's assistant, counselor at the Albany County Jail, and taught people life skills at the Adult learning center in Albany.

Kenneth "Kenny" Beresford Williams, Jr., 72, of Troy, passed away on Friday, February 5, 2016. He was a United States Army veteran, having served from 1965 to 1967. After his discharge from the military, he pursued a career as a librarian. Mr. Williams retired as librarian at the Learning Center at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.

Adelard F. Hanley, 90, of Averill Park, died on Saturday February 6, 2016. In 1949, Adelard began his career with the Troy City School District. He taught and administrated at various Troy elementary schools. During the early 1970's he served as Assistant Principal at Troy High and retired in 1985.

Rose Elizabeth "Liz" Praetorius, 50, of Dunkirk, N.Y., vice president for Finance and Administration at SUNY Fredonia, died Thursday, February 4, 2016. Her 25 year career was spent entirely within the State University of New York system. 

Nancy Lou Kim, 82, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2016. She was a post master in Voorheesville, then moved to Hawaii and worked for the Hawaiian Telephone Company. After moving back to the Capital District she worked for the Guilderland School District until her passing. 

Marion A. Richardson Daubney, 93, , of Ballston Spa, formerly of Waterford, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2016. Marion was employed as a lunch monitor for the Waterford-Halfmoon School for ten years.

Paul M. Davignon, of Delmar, born July 3, 1941, died February 5, 2016. For over 40 years he taught religion and world languages at several Long Island and New Jersey Catholic schools and at Dwight Morrow High School in the Englewood (New Jersey) Public School District where he was a mentor and involved in the teachers' union.

Eleanor N. Nichols, 90, of Rhinebeck, passed away on or about Saturday, February 6, 2016. She worked at the former Sand Lake Elementary School, in the Averill Park School District, as secretary to the principal, retiring in 1996. 

Daniel E. McCann, 78, of East Greenbush died February 4, 2016. In his retirement he worked in the facilities department for the East Greenbush Central Schools.

Robert Marshall Pruzek, 75, passed away on January 21, 2016, in Long Beach, Calif. In 1965, he began his 50 year career as professor in the division of educational psychology and methodology at the State University of New York  at Albany with a specialization in statistics, experimental design and research methodology.

Adrienne Wroblewski Mason, 79, of East Berne, died January 30, 2016. She followed a professional singing career by teaching music to countless Westmere (Guilderland) Elementary and private students.

Richard J. "Dick" Buck Jr., 85, of Clifton Park, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2016. After retiring from teaching mathematics full-time in the Niskayuna School District, he enjoyed tutoring math for many years.

Linda M. Januszewski-Billington, of Johnstown, NY, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2016. Born September 18, 1951 in Amsterdam, NY,  Linda was employed at Broadalbin-Perth High School for many years, working in the cafeteria until her retirement.

Thelma Jane Palmer, 92, a resident of Marvin, NC, and formerly Ravena, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2016. Thelma worked twenty years as a secretary for the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk School District at Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary School in Ravena.

Amy Amelia Tulk Harland, of West Sand Lake, died January 27, 2016, at the age of 76. Following college she worked for several years as an elementary school teacher in Spring Valley, N.Y.

Clare F. Beames III, of Niskayuna, died Monday, February 1, 2016. After retirement from the Army, Clare worked for the South Colonie School District for 17 years. He was the supervisor of buildings and grounds.

Ronald R. Morris, 67, of Rotterdam, died Sunday, January 31, 2016. For 35 years he was employed in the maintenance department at Ellis Hospital and for two years he worked for the Mohonasen School District as a bus monitor.

Joanne Miriam Arnow Stillman, 71, of Boca Raton, Florida, died Monday, February 1, 2016. Joanne was a teacher in the Schenectady Public Schools for over 23 years.

Donald L. Filkins, 81, of Guilderland, passed away on January 29, 2016. He was a United States Navy Veteran. He retired from Local 106 Operating Engineers and SUNY Albany.

Linda Marie DiCrescenzo, 68, of Halfmoon, passed on January 28, 2016. In 1970, she began her career as a sixth grade school teacher at the Shenendehowa School District until she retired in 2005.

Edwin Andrews, 79, of Rexford, passed away Friday, January 26, 2016. Ed taught and/or administrated at Buffalo State College, Genesee Community College in Flint, Mich., Schenectady County Community College, and at Cobleskill College, SUNY, in Cobleskill, from which he retired in 2000.

Maria Christina LaBate, 31, of Albany,  passed on Saturday, January 23, 2016. She worked for a time as a substitute teacher in various Capital District school systems and later as a long-term substitute in the Mohonasen School District. 

"Shoot the Luck" Barbara A. "Aunt Barb" Cunningham, 75, of Albany, died  January 25, 2016. Aunt Barb was a Home Economics teacher at Hackett Middle School for over 30 years.

Thomas S. Mullen, Jr., 88, of Rotterdam, died Friday, January 22, 2016. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. Tom was a science teacher at the Farnsworth Middle School in Guilderland for over 30 years, until retiring.

Barry S. Nadler, a retired teacher for Schenectady City School District and a resident of the area, passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2016. He was 76. In addition to being a teacher, Barry was a Union Chief Negotiator for the Schenectady Federation of Teachers where he negotiated many contracts over the years. He went to jail in 1975 for the Teachers' Union Strike. 

Susan Jordan, 69, 22 year principal of Amy Beverland Elementary School in the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, which is near Indianapolis, IN, was accidently hit and killed by a school bus which jumped the curb at dismissal time on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. The popular and beloved principal  pushed kids out of the way of the bus before it hit her, the bus driver told authorities. Susan Jordan was a hero. Renata Luigina Gouthier Semenza, 88, of Clifton Park, died Saturday, January 23, 2016. Renata taught elementary school in New York City and at periods throughout her life in Albany, after moving to the Capital District in 1956.

George J. Hartshorne, Jr., 93, died on Sunday, January 24, 2016. George was head custodian at Niskayuna School District for many years until his retirement in 1984.

Bernard "Barney" Cukrovany, 90, of Schaghticoke, died Friday, January 22, 2016. As a young man he had been a school bus driver and worked on the family farm.

Theodore "Al" Blanchette, 86, of Guilderland, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2016. Al was employed at the State University at Albany as a mason, retiring in 1995. 

Robert C. Jackson, 92, of Slingerlands, passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2016. He served in World War II in Europe, an ex-POW of Germany. He had a career of over 30 years with North Colonie school athletics.

Eleanore "Ellie" M. Doughty House passed away at age 90 on January 20, 2016, in Fort Edward.  Over the years she held various secretarial positions including jobs at General Electric, Mechanicville Savings and Loan and Shenendehowa Central School. 

Marie Janvier, 21, a teacher's aide at La Loche Community School in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, was shot and killed in the school on Friday, January 22, 2016.

Adam Wood, 35, a teacher at La Loche Community School in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, was shot and killed in the school on Friday, January 22, 2016.

Patricia C. Jurcsak, 78, of Ballston spa, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2016. Pat worked as a teaching assistant at the Ballston Spa High School, retiring in 2000. 

Eleanor J. O'Neil, 96, of Albany, died Wednesday, January 20, 2016. Born in Lowville, NY, she retired as a teacher after many years with the Albany City School District.

Virginia Rose Van Vranken, 64, of Balston Center, passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2016. She was an adjunct professor of social work for Skidmore College and SUNY Albany.

Margery "Marg" Comerford-Dardani, 96, of Loudonville, died on Wednesday, January 20, 2016. She taught all levels of high school Science and was head of the Science Department at Coxsackie-Athens Central School District. She became a Certified School Counselor and was the first female high school guidance counselor in the district.

Mary "Joan" Norman, 82, of Wynantskill, passed away on Monday, January 18, 2016. Joan taught first grade for over 30 years, retiring from the Averill Park Central School District in 1991.

Frances C. Trebour Seelig, 95, of Brunswick, NY, died Wednesday, January 20, 2016. Mrs. Seelig was a teacher with BOCES, Headstart and early in her career, Bloomfield Junior High School in NJ. 

John Smith, 88, of Amsterdam, passed away Monday morning, January 18, 2016. He was a science teacher in the Greater Amsterdam School District for 33 and a half years. 

Mary M. Stockwell, 84, of Albany, died Tuesday, January 19, 2016. Born in County Galway, Ireland, she was a longtime employee of University of Albany.

Eleanor Grounds Winne, 94, of Colonie, died Sunday, January 17, 2016. She was employed as a teacher by the South Colonie School District for 23 years, retiring in the late 1970's. She was a recipient of a Teacher of the Year Award.

Louis J. Pitnell, age 90, of Clifton Park passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2016. He worked as an English teacher at Watervliet High School from 1955 to 1958, before beginning his tenure at Colonie Central High School from 1958 to 1985.

Lucie McNulty died two and a half years ago in her home. The retired music teacher from Williamsville's Casey Middle School, who in 2001 retreated to a reclusive life in Wells, Maine, taught for a total of 31 years in the Williamsville Central School District near Buffalo, NY. A gifted flutist, who lead her students to perform stirring concerts, she would have been 69. This obituary was reported in a January 16, 2016 Schenectady Daily Gazette article, originally from the Buffalo News.


Myron G. Lewis, 76, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2016. Born in Ballston Spa, New York on May 26, 1939, he worked in the automotive business and later for Ballston Spa Central Schools, retiring in 2013.

Barbara Gene (Gritzbach, Barton) Leiden, of South Chatham, MA, died January 8, 2016 at age 69. Barbara taught English for 33 years in Schenectady, at the middle and high school level before retiring in 2002. 

Dorothy Faughnan Powell Purello died on Monday, January 11, 2016. Dorothy was born in Albany in 1936. She was an elementary school teacher in the Albany Public Schools for over 20 years before retiring as a budget analyst for the New York State's Senate Finance Committee.

Cheryl "Cherie" Cassidy, 66, of Colonie, passed away on January 7, 2016. Cherie was an executive secretary for Hills Brothers Coffee and after retirement, she worked in food service at Sand Creek Middle School in South Colonie.


Kathleen Ann Burns (Tyer), 64, of East Greenbush, died Friday, January 8, 2016. Kate worked in the field of nursing for over 40 years, ending her career teaching as a clinical instructor in the LPN program at Questar III (BOCES for Rensselaer, Columbia, and Greene counties).

Teresa Ann Moshier, 66, of Jacksonville, Florida, died January 8, 2016. She worked as the director of personnel for Human Resources at the State University of New York at Albany for thirty years. 

Edmund A. Sherman Jr., 88, of Albany, died Friday, January 8, 2016. He was Professor Emeritus, State University of New York at Albany, where he taught graduate courses in aging, human development, social work practice, and research for 22 years in the School of Social Welfare before retiring in 1995.

Nan K. Lynch, 64, of Guilderland, passed on Friday, January 8, 2016. Nan was a full-time Mom for many years, after which she worked in various part-time teaching assistant positions in the Guilderland school district.

Vyvian Marie Therese d`Estienne, 76, of Schenectady, died Friday, January 8, 2016. Vyvian was a school teacher for the Schenectady School District for 35 years, retiring in 2000. She was a recipient of the New York State Teacher of the Year award. 

Angelo J. Fuschino, 88, of Ballston Spa, died Thursday, January 7, 2016. Ang worked as a janitor for Ballston Spa's Malta Avenue Elementary School. 

Jeannette E. Gizzi, 90, passed away on January 6, 2016. Born in Cohoes, NY on December 19, 1925, Jeannette was a lifelong resident of the area. She worked for the Ballston Spa Central School District for 18 years. 

Robert James Tyrrell, 89, of Greenville, passed away early Sunday, January 3, 2016. Bob was hired by Greenville Central School in 1949, where he served as music director for grades 7-12 for 26 years and the secondary principal for the Jr-Sr High School for seven years. After retiring from GCS in 1982, Bob became an adjunct music instructor for Columbia-Greene Community College, teaching courses in music history before retiring after 20 years in 2006.

Joseph Noel Gilroy, 62, of Loudonville, passed on January 5, 2016. He was born on December 30, 1953, in County Sligo, Ireland. Noel retired from the State University of New York in 2012, after 34 years of service.

Mr. Norman Rowe McConney Jr., of Menands, passed on January 1, 2016. Norman was born on November 10, 1946, in Toronto, Canada. From 1971-1975 he served as the assistant dean for Special Programs at the State University of New York. 

Amaryllis M. Volk (Amy), 81, passed away on January 3, 2016. After a move to Scotia, NY, Amy went on to have a long and wonderful career as an elementary school teacher in the Scotia-Glenville School District.

Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Haller, 80, of Schenectady, passed away Sunday, January 3, 2016. Born August 19, 1935, in Erie, Pennsylvania, Betty worked in the purchasing department at SUNY Albany.

Paul A. Bourgeois, 85, of Cohoes, passed away on January 3, 2016. Paul spent 38 years as a math teacher at Columbia High School in East Greenbush where he was recognized twice as Teacher of the Year. 

Claire Goodman, 88, of Yonkers, passed away January 2, 2016. She was born in the Bronx. Mrs. Goodman was an administrator and educator in the New York City public schools.
