Catherine J. Boyd, 91, of Schenectady passed away in April 2020, at the beginning of the Covid pandemic. Born in Sumpter, South Carolina and raised in Schenectady, Catherine graduated from Nott Terrace High School and attended New York University for two years. She went on to serve students for nearly three decades as a dedicated teacher and library aide for the Schenectady Public Schools, many of those years at the Woodlawn Middle School. Along with her husband (Ralph Sr.) and other close colleagues, she helped co-found the Schenectady Branch of the NAACP, and was active for many years in the Schenectady Community Action Program, the Interfaith Community of Schenectady, and the Schenectady Inner City Ministry ("SCIM").

Marcia R. Liebundguth Popolizio, 78, a resident of Plainfield, IL, formerly of Naperville, IL, passed away on December 23, 2020 in Oswego, IL. She was born December 19, 1942 in Schenectady, NY. Marcia grew up in Schenectady, New York and graduated valedictorian from Colonie Central High School. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Teaching from SUNY at Albany. After graduation, Marcia taught middle school English in Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake until she married in 1967 and moved to Illinois. From 1975 until her retirement in 2002, Marcia taught high school English and Special Education for West Aurora School District 129 in Aurora, Illinois.

Michael D. Murray, 47, of Frankfort, NY, passed away on January 9, 2020. Mike was born on October 27, 1973, in New Hartford, NY. After graduating from Ilion High School, he attended Utica College, graduating with a Master's Degree in English Education. Mike was employed as a middle school English teacher in Little Falls for many years and was very devoted to his students. He was an avid listener of music and attended numerous live concert venues. He was an ardent collector of Marvel Comic Books.

Carol L. Denison passed away Sunday December 20, 2020. She was born on November 7, 1948 in Ilion. Carol worked for the Ilion School district until her retirement. She continued to dedicate her time to helping the district for many years after by, volunteering to work the polls at the local elections, working as a bus monitor and coming in on occasion when a position needed filling. She loved the job and she loved the people she worked with and made many lifelong friends that she considered family.

Judge Ethel Louise Brewer was born on February 19, 1950, in Utica, New York. She died Wednesday, September 9, 2020. She held various positions in higher education at Hudson Valley Community College, Troy, NY; Union College, Schenectady, NY; Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY; and Benedict College, Columbia, SC. In 2012, she was appointed by then Governor Nikki Haley to serve as a Summary Court Judge in Richland County, SC. She was a dedicated servant until her recent retirement in August 2020. Posted March 26, 2021.

Carl Silver of Greenfield, MA passed away September 26, 2020. A Franklin County, MA, resident for 46 years, Carl was born in Brooklyn, New York. Carl grew up a precocious child who always marched to the beat of his own drum. He was an officer in the U.S. Air Force, a high school biology teacher, a guidance counselor, a U.S. park ranger, and then earned a Ph.D. in Psychology. Posted March 26, 2021.

Kevin Thomas Dowd, 68, died on Friday, December 11, 2020 in York, Pa. The cause was complications from COVID-19. For 35 years, he taught social studies and history to junior high students at Gardner-Dickinson School in Wynantskill. He served as the middle school's eighth-grade advisor, the vice-president of the teachers' union and a soccer coach.

Robert M. Lea, 88, of Egremont, Mass., passed away on June 1, 2020. Bob did research at Brookhaven National Laboratory and then was a physics professor at City College of City University of New York until retirement in 1992.

Marianne O'Callaghan was born in New York City on August 31, 1941, and died June 27, 2020, in Jensen Beach, Fla. She was a dedicated and inspiring art teacher for 35 years in Schenectady. After moving to Jensen Beach in 2007, she became a fixture at Jensen Beach High School as a substitute teacher.

Gordon F. Puls, 79, of Green, Ohio passed away Thursday April 16th, 2020 from complications related to COVID-19. Gordon taught Geometry at Southwestern Central High School before moving to Ohio to work at Alliance High School. Gordon retired as a vocational guidance counselor.

Clayton A. Dyer, 86, of Scarborough, Maine died April 7, 2020. He served in the United States Air Force as a radar technician on the F-94C Fighter/Interceptor Aircraft from 1954-1957. He taught biology at South Portland High School for 29 years from 1961-1990 during which he served as department head for five years.

Ralph Angelus Caruso Jr., 87, of Glenville, died Saturday, May 2, 2020. In 1952, he enlisted in the US Navy, serving on the USS Tweety until his honorable discharge. Ralph worked as a computer specialist and/or computer consultant for GE, Honeywell, Amsterdam Printing Company, and CLT. Some of his most fulfilling work came following retirement, when he worked as a door monitor at the Scotia elementary school attended by his eldest grandchildren.

Sister Theresa Fournier, CSJ, 93, of Latham, died Friday, December 18, 2020. For 21 years, Sister Theresa taught students in junior high in various schools in the Ogdensburg Diocese. After completing her doctorate, Sister Theresa began teaching history on the college level at Clinton County Community College, Plattsburgh, Maria Regina College, Syracuse, and Utica College and Mohawk Valley Community College, both in Utica, N.Y.

On November 21, 2020, Sandra Jeanne Debus, 71, of Round Lake died. Sandy taught remedial reading at Berlin Central Schools and then spent 36 years as a school teacher at Tesago Elementary, part of the Shenendehowa school system in Clifton Park, retiring in 2010.

Madelene Weiderman, 102, formerly of Amsterdam, passed away on Monday, December 28, 2020. Mrs. Weiderman was employed in the cafeteria at the Perth Central School for twenty-five years, retiring in 1982.

Shirley (Knights) MacMillin, 93, of Ballston Spa, passed away December 29, 2020. Shirley taught at the Galway Central School, the South Onondaga School district, and the Shenendehowa School district, teaching in Jonesville, and the Arongen and Chango buildings. She finished out her teaching career as an elementary school librarian.

Henry "Hank" Landau, 91, of Colonie, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2020. Hank was in the U.S. Navy 1945-46 and took part in two atomic bomb tests called "Operation Crossroads" at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, Pacific Theater. While in public life Hank served on a number of trade, union, and public service councils including being president of the New York State Union Label Service Trades. Hank was a good friend of the South Colonie Teachers' Association prior to and during the 1975 teachers' strike. His wife was employed at the South Colonie District Office and refused to cross the picket line. The District fired her from her position. Hank took her case to court. Her job was offered to her and she resigned, after her moral victory.

Victor R. Gabriel, "Ron," 73 of Hudson, passed away on December 31, 2020. He retired after 35 years as a math teacher at Ichabod Crane Central School, where he coached boy's bowling and volleyball.

Donna M. Milkins, 73 of Ballston Lake, died Sunday, December 20, 2020. Miss Milkins was an elementary school teacher for five years at the Arongen building and the remainder at the Chango building in the Shenendehowa Central School District where she retired after 29 dedicated years in 1999.

Janet W. (Wells) Clark, 89, of Amsterdam, died December 12, 2020. She taught elementary school at Amsterdam for several years before becoming a guidance counselor for the Canajoharie Central School System, retiring in 1988.

Linda Cable, 74, of Schenectady, passed away on Friday, December 11, 2020. Linda received her teaching degree from SUNY Albany. She taught in the Schenectady School District for 33 years before retiring in 2002.

René C. Roser, 87, of Fort Plain, New York died Monday, December 14, 2020.  He served in the United States Marine Corps. René began his education career at Bethlehem Central School in Delmar teaching history and retired from the Canajoharie High School History Department in 1990.

Shirley K. Brazee, 98, of Scotia, passed away December 28, 2020. Shirley began work with the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake SD first as a bus driver, then moved into the O'Rourke Middle School. There, Shirley worked as a Head Secretary for over 30 years until her retirement in 1999.

Dawne Rose Guidry, 78, of Scotia died December 28, 2020. Dawne taught at South Colonie High School and later worked as a caseworker at the Schenectady County Department of Social Services, then went on to spend the rest of her career training foster parents at the Center for the Development of Human Services; the curriculum she developed there is still being used today to help children in care.

Harry Barner, 91 of East Greenbush, died December 25, 2020. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Harry started teaching industrial arts at Rensselaer City schools in 1958 and retired in 1991 but continued to substitute teach for many years.

Jacob "Jake" Nolfo, 93, of Albany,  died December 28, 2020. He served in the United States Navy during World War II on the USS Pennsylvania in the Pacific Theater.  Jake was a high school teacher, guidance counselor and district supervisor for many years in Philadelphia, Kaiserslautern, Germany, Yorktown and for most of his career in Kingston, NY.

Joseph Craig Doherty, 83, of Clifton Park, died December 22, 2020. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a Military Policeman in Japan for three years. After college, Craig worked as an administrator in the Mechanicville School District, Pineview Christian Academy, and the Shenendehowa Central School District.

Anthony "Tony" F. Levitto, 91, of Latham,  entered into eternal life on Wednesday, December 23, 2020. Tony was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a football coach for many local high schools and retired as a driver education teacher from Albany Public Schools.

William Robert Collins, 87, of Canton, NY,  died Wednesday, December 16, 2020. Fulfilling his patriotic duty, in 1955 Bill joined the Army and was stationed in Korea. After an honorable discharge in 1957, Bill began his teaching career at Coxsackie-Athens Central School teaching both French and English. In 1963, Bill was hired by Niskayuna Central Schools as a teacher of French. He retired as
department chair of foreign languages at Niskayuna.

Janet R. Richards, 91, of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, died December 13, 2020.  During her career, she was a librarian for schools in Skaneateles, Chittenango, and South Colonie. Janet loved books and children.

Kevin C. Halloran, of Melrose passed away December 13, 2020. Born in Cohoes on July 19, 1934, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a beloved English teacher at Hoosic Valley High School. He also wrote op-ed pieces for the Albany Times-Union and the Schenectady Gazette, encompassing his quirky humor and most importantly, his belief in social justice.

Helene Margaret Ann (Mason) "Tootsie" Mott Bradfield, 92, of Salesville, AR, died December 9, 2020. She began her career as Secretary to the Principal of Pinewood Elementary School (Mohonasen School District), working for the State of New York for several years and then for the American Embassy for 7 years in Saudi Arabia. Her last position before retirement was working for the C.I.A. during the Reagan Administration.

Robert Atwood, 85, of Scoia, died 12/02/2020. A native of Scotia, he served as a lieutenant in the US Army, stationed primarily In Frankfurt, Germany. Atwood taught English and journalism at Scotia-Glenville High School from 1960 to 1973. He was appointed English department chairman in 1967. In 1973 he moved to Maryland where he taught at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda until his retirement in 1996. Under his guidance, the school newspaper won national recognition in many competitions.

William S. “Stan” McMillan, 96, formerly of Canajoharie, died Thursday, December 10, 2020. Stan enlisted in the United States Navy and served until his honorable discharge in 1945. During that time, he was stationed on the USS Bull and the USS Bates. He was a sonarman on a destroyer escort where he made 14 trips across the Atlantic Ocean. His ship was also part of the D Day invasion. Following the Battle at Okinawa, where the USS Bates sunk, Stan was then assigned to Key West, Florida where he taught Sonar. After the war, he taught instrumental music in Canajoharie and Ilion Central Schools where he was the Music Department Chairman.

A married couple who were both teachers in Texas died of COVID-19 complications while holding hands. Paul Blackwell, 61, and Rose Mary Blackwell, 65, died on Sunday, December 13, 2020. Both Paul and Rose Mary were longtime teachers within the Grand Prairie Independent School District and had been working until they became sick in December. Rose Mary was a second-grade teacher at Travis World Language Academy and just reached her 20-year anniversary at the school. Paul was a PE teacher and football coach at Fannin Middle School.

Patricia Perkins Brown, 69, passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2020. She was born in Ballston Spa, NY on June 28, 1951 and was a 1969 graduate of Ballston Spa High School. Patricia worked for SUNY Cortland for many years.

Sharon Lubin was born on May 26, 1946. She passed away on November 14, 2020.  Sharon was a retired New York City teacher and a Union activist. She marched in many protests for equal treatment of all - from farmworkers rights and Black Lives Matter events to teacher's picket lines and other labor and social justice protests.

Warren E. Mannix, 77 of Clifton Park, and formerly of Cohoes died Wednesday, December 9, 2020. He graduated from Cohoes High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Warren started teaching at Cohoes High School in 1969 where he taught math and then photography until retiring in 1998. While at C.H.S., he had a very successful career, coaching both Boys and Girls Junior Varsity Basketball teams and more recently coaching Girls Varsity Basketball. He had served as president of the Cohoes Teachers' Association for 14 years.

Sally B. Conley, 88, of Glenville, passed away Saturday December 5, 2020. Sally and her husband owned and operated Conley Designs in Schenectady until the early 90's. She later worked at the Scotia-Glenville Middle and High schools.

Pauline Margaret Walsh (Lajeunesse), 92, of Niskayuna, passed away Friday, December 4, 2020. She was employed by the NYS Department of Criminal Justice and later retired from the County of Schenectady. Pauline fondly recalled teaching in a one room school house, never forgetting to mention with a smile that her younger brothers had to address her as 'Miss Lajeunesse'.

Alma H. Williams, of Ilion, who turned 95 on Easter Sunday, died on Thursday, December 3, 2020. During World War II, Alma attended high school from 6 a.m. until noon in Amsterdam and then worked in the office of Mohawk Carpet Mills, from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Upon graduation from college, she moved to West Winfield, to teach school. Alma later taught in both the Ilion and Herkimer School Districts.

Dorothy M. Rowland, 94, lifelong resident of Greenfield Center, NY, went to eternal rest on November 29, 2020. She was employed by Skidmore College in Food Service and later at Saratoga Springs City School District as the School Lunch Director for 25 years. During this time she was named to the NYS Skilled Worker Emeritus Program by Governor Mario Cuomo.

William H. Ward passed away Sunday, November 29, 2020. William was a Korean War Veteran, serving in the Army 1952-53. He worked at both General Electric and the Guilderland Central School District, retiring from both jobs after 45 years of service.

Edward Joseph Murphy, 89, passed away Tuesday, December 1, 2020. He served in the Army for two years, from 1951-1953, when he was stationed in Pusan, Korea. He taught Math at Amsterdam Junior and Senior High Schools for 34 years. He was especially proud to have developed the Accelerated Math program at the junior high school shortly after starting in 1956. He retired in 1990.

Marilyn (Houghton) La Londe, 86 of Schenectady, passed away November 29, 2020. She worked as a retouch artist for White Studio in Schenectady and as a teacher's aide in the Guilderland School District, but her most treasured job was as mother to her four children.

Sylvia Ann (Kennedy) Heiner passed away December 1, 2020. Her career began at St. Helens School in Schenectady. She went on to teach English at Linton High School in Schenectady. Prior to retirement, her 35-year teaching career included reading recovery at Woodlawn Elementary School, also in Schenectady.

Thomas R. Stephany, 63 of Delmar, died December 1, 2020, after a courageous battle with COVID-19 complicated by Parkinson's disease. He retired from the Bethlehem Central School district after 33 years of service.

Leonard Porter, 91, of Rexford and former longtime resident of Ballston Lake, died at December 2, 2020. He shared his love for the sciences as a teacher, first with the Montpelier Public Schools and later as a long-time science teacher in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District. Outside of his work, Leonard served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard with the 105th Armored Infantry.

William A. Jerwann, Jr., 90, of Clifton Park, passed away on December 3, 2020. Upon college graduation he enlisted in the United States Army. He served with the 5th Armored Division during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1954 and was honorably discharged. Bill started his teaching career in 1954 at South Colonie High School. Later he accepted a position at the new Shaker High School in the North Colonie School District as a member of the original staff and taught Industrial Arts until retiring in 1986.

Marcia Miller Rosen, 84 of Slingerlands, passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2020. Marcia was born in the Bronx in 1936 and moved as a young child to East Durham. Marcia graduated from Russell Sage College and worked as a elementary teacher in the North Colonie schools.

Michael Hall Priester, 78 of Surfside Beach, S.C. passed away November 18, 2020. Mr. Priester was employed as a business teacher at New Lebanon High School for many years. He retired down to the Surfside Beach, S.C. area where he lived out the remainder of his life.

Gary Allen DiLallo, 78, of Clifton Park passed away early Saturday, November 21, 2020. He taught social studies and computer technology for 28 years to middle and high school students in Mechanicville. He also coached football, track and swimming. Gary was also an active member of New York State United Teachers and served five years as president of the Mechanicville Teachers Association. Through the New York State School Boards Association, Gary actively lobbied to modify and improve state and federal education regulations. The organization honored Gary as its Advocate of the Year in 2011.

Shirley T. Conway, 93 of Castleton, passed away on Friday, November 27, 2020. Shirley was born in Elmsford, N.Y. She retired as a physical education teacher from East Greenbush Central Schools after many years. For hobbies she taught baton twirling and enjoyed gardening, bowling, cards, and traveling to casinos.

Geraldine "Gerry" Hayford, of Albany,  went to be with the Lord on November 21, 2020. Born in Albany in 1941, Geraldine was a graduate of Cardinal McCloskey Memorial High School and The College of Saint Rose. Gerry was a skilled and dedicated high school English teacher who spent most of her 30-year career at Colonie Central High School in the South Colonie School District before retiring in 1995.

Mary "Maureen" Sheridan, of Clifton Park, died on November 23, 2019. Maureen was a special education teacher at Shaker Junior High School in the North Colonie School District for over 20 years. She had a true passion for assisting children with special needs.

Shirley Tetreault, 91, of Northville passed away on November 17, 2020. Shirley taught physical education at Guilderland High School for 33 years. She loved her years of coaching girls' varsity sports and was fondly called "Big Red" because of her red lipstick and school colors.

Alvin "Skip" M. Johnston, 81, of Glenville, NY, passed away Monday, October 26, 2020. He attended Penn State University before serving in the US Navy, where he attained the rank of lieutenant. Skip taught English at Mont Pleasant and Niskayuna High Schools in Schenectady, NY, although he spent most of his career as a locomotive engineer for Conrail and CSX.

Patrick J. "Pat" Longo, 82 of Clifton Park, entered into eternal life Monday, November 16, 2020. Born in Albany, he served in the New York State National Guard. Mr. Longo retired from New York State United Teachers where he was director of retirement services, having previously retired as director of the Greater Capital Region Teacher's Center and as a beloved teacher in the South Colonie Central School District. Pat served as president of the South Colonie Teacher's Association and assisted in the establishment of Labor Unions as an organizer in a number of countries.

Barry was a teacher of American history and the Constitution and retired from Amsterdam High School after a long career of educating thousands of young people into the workings and marvels of our nation and its governance.

Paul served in the US Army Air Corps from 1945-47, mainly stationed in Fritzlar, Germany. Paul was a general and earth science teacher at Mechanicville Middle School for almost 33 years. Most of his teaching career was spent as a middle school science teacher while also serving for a period of time as a Principal.

Dr. Peter M. McManus, 88, died November 3, 2020. He served his country in the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, GA. and after his service, went on to devote his life to education. He spent 30 years with the North Colonie School District until his retirement in 1991, and continued teaching graduate level courses at several universities until 2012.

Dr. Frank C. Mayer, retired Superintendent of Schenectady City School District passed away on his 89th birthday, October 28, 2020. He entered the U.S. Army following undergraduate school and was assigned to the G-4 Top Secret repository at Seventh Army Headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. Following his honorable discharge, he spent 31 years in public education, retiring as Superintendent of Schools from Schenectady City School District.

(Cain), born May 3, 1924, died Friday October 30, 2020 at the age of 96. As a nun, she taught at Sacred Heart School in Watervliet, St. John’s School in Rensselaer and Vincentian Glass School and Annex and St. Joseph’s High School in Albany. As Mrs. Charlotte Ferguson, she taught for BOCES special education in Middleburg, NY, Westmere School, and Colonie.

Vincent T. Fernandez, 92, of Rotterdam, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2020. He joined the U.S. Army in 1953 where he would serve his country honorably and faithfully until his discharge in 1955. He worked as a teacher for several years before serving as a guidance counselor for over 30 years before his retirement from the Mohonasen School District.

G. Joseph Buckley, of Ballston Lake, passed away at the age of 92 on October 30, 2020. He began his lifelong career in education teaching third and fourth grade at Lake Pleasant Central School in Speculator New York. Following his rewarding time at Lake Pleasant, Joe accepted a position at Pashley Elementary School in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District teaching fourth and fifth grade before assuming the role of assistant principal in 1958, then advancing to principal in 1963, retiring in 1988.

At the time of his death, Matthew was a teaching assistant at Coxsackie-Athens High School, a job he truly loved. Thomas E. Baker, 92, of Guilderland, formerly of Seneca Falls, N.Y., died Monday, September 28, 2020. He was drafted into the Army, where he spent a year in Texas as a French horn musician in the 1st Army Division Band before being sent to Okinawa, Japan. He became a music teacher in the Voorheesville Central School District in 1953, first in all grade levels and then in the elementary school, until retiring in 1983. He taught band and vocal groups and directed school musical performances.

James R. "Coach" Connolly, 76 of Selkirk, died Monday, September 28, 2020. Coach was a kind, charismatic teacher and track coach who left an indelible mark on generations of students and athletes at Cardinal McCloskey High School and Scotia-Glenville High School. D.M.V. in Albany until her retirement.

Born in Albany, she was a science teacher at Colonie Central High School in the South Colonie School District for 46 years and she served as department coordinator for several decades. (CNN) At least three teachers have died from complications of Covid-19 in recent weeks, according to CNN reporting and local media reports.

Demetria Bannister, a 28-year-old elementary school teacher in Columbia, South Carolina, was diagnosed with the virus last Friday and died Monday from Covid-19 complications, a week into the start of the school year there, CNN affiliate WIS reported.
AshLee DeMarinis, a 34-year-old middle school teacher in Potosi, Missouri, died Sunday after battling complications related to Covid-19 for three weeks, CNN affiliate KMOV reported.
Thomas Slade, a teacher at Vancleave High School in Jackson County, Mississippi, passed away last week, Superintendent John Strycker said in a statement on Wednesday. CNN affiliate WLOX reported that Slade died on Sunday due to complications related to Covid-19.

James W. Cronin, 90, of Scotia, passed away September 3, 2020. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy honorably serving his country for 4 years. He  taught school in Delmar and Las Vegas, NV for several years before returning to Schenectady. James finished his long devoted career to educating children as a case worker for the Department of Social Services in Schenectady.

Arthur Eugene Walker Jr., 89, of Latham, passed away Monday, September 14, 2020. After college, Art joined the United States Army and served in Germany during the Korean War. After returning from the war, Art was employed as a physical education teacher in the North Colonie School District and would later serve as principal of Shaker High School from 1970 until 1991. Art was not only a beloved teacher and principal at Shaker but was also a legendary football, basketball and baseball coach.

Ronald Harold Baker, 79 of Colonie, passed away on September 4, 2020. He was a high school social studies teacher at Shaker High School where he was also a football and wrestling coach. His love and dedication to the fire service, EMS, and education made him a natural fit to leave teaching and become the EMS coordinator for the City of Troy Fire Department. When his hometown of Colonie required a change from volunteer emergency medical services, Ron became the deputy director of EMS, a job he held until his retirement.

Earle Edward Flatt, 98, of Albany,  passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2020. During World War II, Earle volunteered for a hazardous assignment in the Pacific Theater as a U.S. Navy "frogman" in one of the newly established Underwater Demolition Teams (the precursor to the Navy SEALS). He served as executive officer of an eighty-man team and was preparing for an eventual invasion of Japan when the war ended in August 1945. He continued his service after the war, first on a patrol craft sweeper, and later as a Naval Reservist, eventually retiring with the rank of commander. After returning from the Pacific, Earle spent his career in the service of teaching and learning, first as a high school teacher, then as an associate professor and supervisor of student teachers at SUNY Albany.

Bob Lancto, 93, of Clifton Park, passed away on June 27, 2020. He joined the US Navy, serving in the Philippines during World War II. Bob began his teaching career at a four-room schoolhouse, foregoing a minor league baseball contract to play for the NY Yankees' minor league team in Montreal. He became an elementary school principal in Plattsburgh. Bob accepted a Principal position at Bedford Hills Elementary School in Bedford Hills, NY and later at Fox Meadow Elementary School in Scarsdale, NY.

Following his military service in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1970, he taught middle school and high school English at Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School for 23 years. After his retirement from C-RCS, he taught English at SUNY Cobleskill, taught guitar at Backstreet Music, and worked at Catnap Books.

Rhoda Ann Meyer passed away July 24, 2020 at age 87. She was born on May 1, 1933 in Lockport, NY. A lifelong New York native, Rhoda enjoyed an adventurous childhood on the family farm. Rhoda graduated from Brockport State Teacher's College in Brockport, NY in 1955, then went on to teach first grade.

Alan Henry Schoonbeck, 79, of Los Osos, CA, passed away on June 24, 2020. Alan taught art at Alden and Bode, IA. While at Bode Twin Rivers High School, "Coach Schoonie" coached nearly everything - baseball, football, track, and junior high basketball. When the family relocated to the Albany area, Alan was employed as the Art Instructor at Oak Hill School, Scotia, New York.

Before entering the world of fashion, he worked as an art teacher at Amsterdam High School. He then began working at “The Costumer” in Schenectady, NY for several years before opening his own business on Jay Street, Schenectady and Newport, RI called “TimeWarp”, a vintage clothing store.

She taught writing at SUNY- Oneonta, Syracuse University, SUNY- Cortland, the University of Delaware, and at the Marist College program at Oneonta Job Corps. A lifelong proponent of civil rights, she was honored as the NAACPs Person of the Year for her campaign for Job Corps students to be able to get Oneonta library cards.

At the completion of her education, Marie began her career at Gloversville High School as a teacher of eleventh grade English. After several years there, she moved to Schenectady where she continued teaching 11th grade English at Niskayuna High School.

Leo Nicolai, 91, of Atlanta, Georgia, formerly of Indian Lake, died on June 7, 2020. Leo served during the Korean War as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. After the war, he continued his service in the Air Force reserve until 1961. Leo taught business education for over 30 years at Indian Lake High School.

Richard B. "Dick" Gribben Sr., 82, of Ballston Lake,  died on June 11, 2020. He was an industrial arts teacher and part-time administrator at the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District for many years. His career started there in 1961 at the Junior High School and from 1974 to 1993 he was a fixture at the High School.

Ann Carol Forman Mataraso, 88, of Guilderland and Manchester Village, Vt., passed away June 10, 2020. Her first teaching job in 1954 was in one of the few remaining one-room schoolhouses in Boytonville, N.Y. (Tamarack School District). Ann later settled in Guilderland, where she taught school at Westmere and Guilderland Elementary in the Guilderland School District for a number of years.

Harry Stanley Weiner of Scotia passed away on Thursday evening, June 11, 2020 at 68 years of age. A teacher for almost 40 years at Shenendehowa High School, Harry taught English to thousands of students during his career. His teaching methods and song parodies became as legendary as his name.

Frank J. Schmitt died Saturday, June 20, 2020. Frank served in the Navy as an airman in Pensacola during the Korean War. Frank worked at IBM then taught industrial arts at Shaker High School for 26 years, retiring in 1988. There he won CDIAA Teacher of the Year and was very proud of starting the soccer program at North Colonie Schools.

Dr. John Brindisi, 95, passed away on June 6, 2020, in Delray Beach, Fla., on the 76th anniversary of the D-Day Normandy invasion. After  high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, trained as a radio operator with Patton's Third Army and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day plus 1. In 1984, he retired from the Northport High School where he served as a high school guidance counselor. As a NYSUT member, Dr. Brindisi founded the Retired Teacher of Northport Association.

He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from SUNY Brockport and had a 30-year career as a physical education teacher at the Tryon School for Boys. Following his retirement, he was a monitor for the Scotia-Glenville School District and operated a landscaping business.

Elisa moved to Middletown, N.Y. in 1982 and taught at the Pine Bush District for over 17 years. She went on to teach another 20 years at Cornwall Central School District, retiring in 2018.

It was in the BH-BL Central School District that Lillian began her second career, teaching elementary school for 16 years. He taught high school English, Speech, and Driver's Education for 31 years at Waterford-Halfmoon High School. She then became the director of Christian education at the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church in Plainfield, N.J. In 1961, she joined the faculty of Princeton Theological Seminary from which she retired.

Born in Albany, Gilbert joined the Army, where he was a specialist fourth class in the First Infantry Division, proudly serving from 1960-1962. Gilbert worked as a butcher at Tobin's First Prize Packing Co. before going on to North Colonie Central School District as a custodian until he retired.

Lois A. (Getty) Flacke, 87, of Westbrook, CT, passed away April 13, 2020 of the COVID-19 virus. She had an extensive teaching career at Arongen Elementary School, Shenendehowa Central School District in Clifton Park, NY where she was dedicated to her students in Kindergarten, remedial reading and English as a second language. Lois was also very active in the teachers' union, negotiating wage and benefit contracts on behalf of union members. She was especially proud of her role in negotiating a "sick bank" that allowed teachers to receive benefits while they fought chronic illnesses.

Ronald Peter Jones (51) died Monday, April 27, 2020. He had recently finished his workday as a teacher for Hoosick Falls Central School (HFCS), from which he himself had graduated in 1986. In 1996, he returned to his home town of Hoosick Falls to teach physical education and take the position of head football coach. He also coached at Siena College in 2000. He was voted Coach of the Year in 2012 by the New York State Sports Writers Association.

Murry Royce O’Neil, 90, of South Glens Falls, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2020. Murry was a U.S. Marine Corp Veteran.In 1951, Murry started his career as the physical education teacher at South Glens Falls High School. And so, began his coaching career, coaching football and basketball at South High for four years. In 1955, Murry took his P.E. teaching career to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, also starting the football, wrestling and track & field programs. He guided the Spartan Gridders until 1985. Murry continued his passion for coaching football at various schools until 2010, retiring after more than 60 years of coaching.

He started his teaching career at Milford Central School and later began his tenure at the Greater Amsterdam School District where he taught History for many decades until his retirement in 1995. He was the President of the Montgomery County Teachers Federal Credit Union, a member of the New York State United Teachers and a member of the Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association.

Maryann Lawrence Barrett, 70, of Little Falls, passed away in the afternoon hours of April 7, 2020. She taught 3rd grade at Barringer Road Elementary School, Ilion, for 34 years until her retirement. Following retirement, she volunteered at the Food Pantry.

He was employed by the Schenectady School District as a school guidance counselor for Central Park Junior High and Linton High School while during the summer break he would teach Driver's Education.

Fletcher, 86, of Clifton Park, died Sunday, March 22, 2020.  She taught first grade for over 40 years in the Port Jefferson and South Colonie Central School Districts, and was a substitute speech teacher for many years at Shenendehowa Central Schools. Jeanne was a member of the South Colonie Teachers Association and Retiree Council 10 of the New York State United Teachers.

Bea began her career teaching visually-impaired students at the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, MA from 1945 to 1954, then relocated to teach physical education at the former Theodore Roosevelt Junior High School in Amsterdam, NY from 1954-58.

Richard Hugh O'Rourke, 90, of Niskayuna, passed away on March 20, 2020. He served the Detroit Public Schools as an English teacher, guidance counselor, and ultimately as Assistant Regional Superintendent. He left the Detroit Public Schools in 1969 to become the superintendent of the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Schools in Burnt Hills, NY. He retired in June 1994 after serving 25 years.

Donald "Skip" McPhee, 79, of the Town of Florida, NY, passed away February 22, 2020. He joined the United States Navy in 1957 and upon his honorable discharge from the Navy he worked at GLF. After he sold his cow herd in 1998, he started working for BOCES where he taught commercial driver training.

Robert F. Trejderowski, 92, of Johnstown, passed away on Monday, February 17, 2020. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. Mr. Trejderowski was a Steamfitter and was employed for many years by the Greater Amsterdam School District as Head Custodian until his retirement.

Albert "Bert" VanDeusen, of Galway, passed away Sunday, February 23, 2020. He was 72. Born in Amsterdam on June 17, 1947, he was honorably discharged from the US Army in 1968 following his service during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star in connection with his service. He most recently worked as a bus driver for Galway Central Schools, retiring in June of 2018.

Susan Murray Grimm, 77, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and formerly of Troy, died Thursday, February 13, 2020. Sue was a second grade teacher for 38 years at the Wynantskill Central School District, retiring in 1998. She was a member of New York State Retired Teachers.

William (Bill) Walker passed away on Monday, February 17, 2020, at the age of 88. Bill served in the US Army for two years stationed in Reykjavik, Iceland. Bill began his teaching career and coached basketball at Mayfield, NY. In 1961, he moved to Burnt Hills and taught Math at Niskayuna High School for 32 years.

Vito Ottati, 89, of Amsterdam, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2020. He was employed by the Greater Amsterdam School District for 33 years, where he was an Industrial Arts Teacher and subsequently became Administrator for the school district. Vito was an honorably discharged United States Navy veteran, serving from 1948 to 1952.

William "Bill" Higgins of Gansevoort died Monday, February 17, 2020 at the age of 83. Higgins was the principal at Fonda-Fultonville from 1971-78 and its superintendent of schools from 1979-93. Later, he served as the superintendent or athletic director on an interim basis at several other Section II districts, including Galway, Saratoga Springs and Queensbury, among others.

Rocco (Jock) (Rocky) Gerald Verrigni passed away on Monday, February 17, 2020. He was born on March 3, 1951 in Saratoga Springs. By the time he retired from Schenectady County Community College he would serve 36 years at the college in hospitality area education, rise from instructor to full professor, receive the SCCC Excellence in Teaching Award and the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2003 and 2004.

Robert volunteered to enter the service and served honorably with the United States Navy during World War II as a petty officer third class, coxswain. Robert was a teacher employed by North Syracuse and Jamesville Dewitt prior to becoming the principal in Fabius, N.Y.

Gloria Aurora Colucciello McDonald, 87, of Scottsdale, AZ, born 8/23/32, died 2/2/20. Her first teaching assignment was at Draper Elementary  in Rotterdam. Until August 2018, Gloria lived 57 years in the Lynchburg, VA area where she taught for more than 40 years.

Jeffrey Allen Herchenroder, born June 13, 1960, from Cambridge, N.Y., died February 7, 2020.  Jeff was a longtime string instrument/orchestra teacher in Guilderland. Prior to Guilderland he taught in Niskayuna. Jeff was also a bassist for the Albany Symphony; he had been a member of the orchestra for over 33 years.

Frances L. Seaman, 77, of Niskayuna, died Friday, February 7, 2020. She taught as an elementary teacher for the City of Schenectady Public Schools for many years before retiring in 2001. She enjoyed listening to her favorite music, especially Barry Manilow and attending many of his concerts.

John DeLong, 60, of Scotia, passed away Friday, February 7, 2020. After high school John joined the US Army and later the Reserves. John worked as head custodian at Lincoln Elementary School in Scotia. John later became a nurse and worked at Ellis Hospital in the ICU and emergency room as a critical care nurse and later in the emergency room at the St. Clare's campus of Ellis Hospital - both in Schenectady.

Anthony L. Davey Jr., 92 of Latham, died Saturday, February 8, 2020. He served during World War II in the Navy from 1945 to 1946. He worked as a teacher and vice principal at Colonie Central High School for 29 years before retiring.

Marion R. Rhodes, 95, of Niskayuna passed away January 25, 2020 in Plano, Texas. She taught Music and English for several years in the Scarsdale and East Chester School Districts. Marion was the 1998 recipient of the prestigious Schenectady Symphony Orchestra Association's Encore Award for her dedication to the Symphony and local community.

Frank served in the US Army in the post WW II occupation, stationed in Germany. He also served as a Councilman and Deputy Supervisor in the Town of Rotterdam.

For 22 years after college Ellen was the vocal and band director at Tupper Lake public schools, the director of music for the Catholic church in Saranac Lake and taught private piano lessons. She was also an instructor at the Adirondack Community College.

Mimi worked as an English teacher at Albany Public School's Hackett Junior High School in downtown Albany and later had a private psychology practice in Latham. Most of all Mimi was a born performer and pursued this passion throughout her life.

Ernest C. "Ernie" Duval, 88, of Saratoga Springs, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2020. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Ernest spent several years in Germany as a first lieutenant, escorting Army freight trains through the Berlin corridor, which included the Russian Checkpoint into West Germany. He taught commercial subjects for twenty seven years at Hartford Central School.

Ruth V. Shiebler, 92, of Malta, died on Sunday, January 19, 2020. Ruth was first employed by the City of Binghamton Junior High music department. In 1951, Ruth was appointed to the staff of Mechanicville School District in charge of chorus and vocal music. In 1954 she became the head of the M.H.S. band and instrumental music program.

Penelope C. O'Brien Gendron, 43, of Coeymans, passed away January 22, 2020. Penny worked for the Ravena Coeymans Selkirk Middle School as a seventh and eighth grade science teacher from 2001 to 2011.

Donald S. Reynolds, 86, of Albany, passed away on January 10, 2020. He was a teacher at Pittsfield High School in Massachusetts, and Amsterdam and Colonie school systems. He retired in 1989. Donald served in the U.S. Army for two years, and was honorably discharged in November 1958. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for several years.

Clara Skavina Hemmett, 94, of Voorheesville, died Wednesday, January 15, 2020. She began her teaching career as a science teacher at the Berne-Knox Westerlo School District. She transferred to the Voorheesville Central School District in 1956 where she taught many different science subjects before becoming the Junior High guidance counselor, retiring in 1980.

In 1982 Chris joined Schenectady City Schools serving as School Counselor and later as City-Wide Chairperson for Guidance and Social Work. Upon her retirement in 2005 the Guidance office at Schenectady High School was named in her honor.

Alice W. Lake, 92, formerly of Fort Plain, NY, passed away January 11, 2020. Mrs. Lake had started working at Luxary Knitting in Fort Plain, then went to work in the Fort Plain school cafeteria. In her "semi-retirement" she worked at Nelsons Dry Cleaners in Fort Plain.

Roger A. LeGare, 72, of East Greenbush, passed away January 12, 2020. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wildwood Programs and/or Crossroads Center for Children, to which Roger enjoyed transporting children with special needs on his daily bus route.

He began as an elementary school teacher in Saratoga, he was a vice principal and principal in the Indian River School District, and retired as superintendent of the Schoharie School District in 2014.

Aleksandra retired from the Averill Park School District in 1987 where she worked in food service primarily at the West Sand Lake Elementary School. Upon her retirement, she was presented with a commendation for perfect attendance.
